“What a terrific message to send to kids! I wish I knew about skin cancer as a child and to wear sun block. I myself had a basal cell on my nose at age 45. This is such an important message to children!” Dr. Jeffrey Stein, Internal Medicine, Board Certified, Boca Rotan, Florida “I am very passionate about preventative health care, especially with respects to sunscreening. I discuss this subject every day with all of my patients and their parents. After having a patient diagnosed with melanoma, I continue to preach the benefits of sunscreening and reapplying every day to prevent skin cancer! I would recommend this book to all of my patients and their parents!” Norina B. Ocampo, MD, FAAP, board certified pediatrician, graduate from Georgetown University School of Medicine, former resident at the MUSC Children’s Hospital
What better way to teach children to stay safe in the sun than to read this lovely story by Kimberling Gelati Kennedy and put the safety tips into practice.
Little Stacey is excited to go shopping at the grocery shop as she often sees her friends there too. Her friend, John, is there with his aunt Donna who has a bandage on her nose. Here, Stacey's inquisitiveness leads Donna to explain all about her condition and how Stacey can take precautions and stay safe in the sun.
The story is told in a lovely rhyming way which will help to reinforce the message with children as they reread it. The pictures are also lovely and charming. Teachers will find this book very useful in the summer term when teaching about sun safety. The book itself is the perfect size for using with a visualiser and whiteboard. Depending on the age of the children some teaching or discussion of the more challenging vocabulary will have to be done before the first reading of the book; ultraviolet rays, basal cell, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, hereditary, genes, water resistant etc.
I love how much detail and information is packed into this short book. Both adult and child alike will find plenty to interest and inform. It gently tells children how the sun damages our skin and why we need to wear sunscreen lotion with a decent SPF. It also explains, very simply, the difference between the three forms of skin cancer. The story also gives tips on how to safely get your daily requirement of Vitamin D. This is an extremely important message to get across as well. The Irish Osteoporosis Society estimate that 88% of Irish primary school children have less than half of the recommended daily amount of Vitamin D.
I love audio books and as an added bonus when you buy 'Hey! Don't Forget The Sunscreen' you also receive a free audio download of the book!! :-)
Thank you to the author who provided a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Hey! Don't Forget The Sunscreen! by Kimberling Galeti Kennedy is a wonderfully written story that helps parents address the effects of unprotected sun exposure with their children.
It's Sunday and Stacey is grocery shopping with her family when she sees her friend John. John is shopping with his Aunt Donna. Stacey notices a bandage on Aunt Donna's nose and asks her about it. Donna proceeds to explain how when she was younger she spent time in the sun and never worried about protection. As a result she has developed skin cancer and had to have the cancer removed from her skin. Aunt Donna also explains the different types of skin cancer and what Stacey and other children can do to stay safe.
As a skin cancer survivor, Kimberling Galeti Kenedy has effectively written this story for young children and through easy flowing text and kid friendly illustrations teaches parents and children how to stay safe in the sun while still getting the important nutrients Vitamin D provides for our bodies.
I definitely recommend picking up a copy which is perfect for the upcoming summer season when many of us spend hours enjoying the warmth of the summer sun. I am also partial to the main character's first name!
I love books like these that help parents educate their children about health and safety issues. I learned more than I thought I knew with this one, too! It is about a girl who sees her friends and their aunt at the store. She asks the aunt why she has a bandaid on her face. The aunt explained about ways you can get skin cancer, that there are three kinds and what they are called, and the importance of using sunscreen. The illustrations are vibrantly colored, and help tell the story.
I would recommend this to all who are around children. I especially would love to see this read in daycare centers, who take the kids to the park or swimming a lot during warm days. They even play outdoors a lot in their fenced-in play yards, also. These books are invaluable.
Thank you Mrs. Kimberling Galeti Kennedy and Word Slinger for giving me a free ARC copy of this book to read and give my honest review. is about a girl
This book is a great way to spread the word about protecting ourselves against the sun and ultra violet rays. It can educate children as well as adults. It all begins with a little girl named Stacey that runs into her friend's Aunt Donna and her friend John at the store. And Aunt Donna has a bandage on her face due to a doctors visit. Aunt Donna proceeds to give Stacey a basic run down on skin cancer and how to protect ourselves from it.
