I like a good western that is not only a good story but one that teaches. Author Berkeley Rourke does both. The time is 1879, and you are going to travel across the desert to Yuma Arizona with a man named Hendershot. You won’t follow Ross Hendershot across the desert to Yuma; you’ll ride with him. You will see what he sees, and you will learn what he learns. If you’ve ever been around horses, you’ll know what the two of you will smell like at the end of a day. The author blends Hendershot’s past and the present together seamlessly so that the reader quickly understands why things are occurring as they do. When Hendershot meets the Yuma sheriff and finds out that they grew up just miles apart but never met and fought in the Civil War on the same side and never met, you get a feeling for the times. Hendershot considers himself a drifter a man who prefers to be alone yet when he meets people they are attracted to him, and they quickly learn to respect him. It is for that very reason some want to kill him. It’s a fast paced page turner reading A TALL MAN RIDES. As I said, I like a good western.

A Western Yarn that's a Fun Read
It's been a long time since I've read a "Western." Growing up, the Old West seemed to be the popular subject of literature and television. "A Tall Man Rides" by H. Berkeley Rourke is a comfortable return to those times. Riding through the Sonora desert of Arizona, from Phoenix to Yuma, itinerant cowboy Ross Hendershot looks for the changes in his life in a new home. Along the way, the reader is treated to a depiction of the dangers of the desert, the chance meetings of other wanderers, and the final arrival in the protagonist's destination. From there, the anticipated action of the frontier begins. Add in a little romance, a new friendship, and the intrigue of a bad guy makes the story complete. I enjoyed this journey, and recommend the cozy style of the author as a starting point for the thrilling days of the Old West.

The year is 1879 and Ross Hendershot decides that he wants to join the Arizona Rangers, which means a trek across the desert to Yuma. The descriptions of the area were so well told, there were times when I almost felt I was on the journey with him. As one would expect it in the days of the wild west, Hendershot's trip is not without hazards of one sort or another. Nevertheless, when he reaches Yuma in one piece, he believes his troubles are over. But are they? Despite the wonderful welcome in Yuma, Ross soon finds his problems are not over...
I really enjoyed this novel. Whether you are into westerns or not, you should give this book a try. You won't be disappointed.

A very good western that holds your attention.

The author, Mr. Rourke could have used a little less description in some of passages, but all in all this was a very good read, with a good plot and a lot of good characters.
