Гонкуровская премия 1915 года — это книга о войне. И написал эту книгу Рене Бенжамен. Он стал первым автором, чьи заслуги в описании ужасов боевых действий были сразу отмечены. Годом позже такой же участи удостоится обладатель премии за 1914 год, пусть и написавший своё произведение раньше, но и опубликовавший вместе с тем позже. Но насколько разнилось содержание этих трудов? Можно смело сказать: различий — минимальное количество. Читатель должен был ознакомиться с бытом воевавших людей, познать все тяготы и невзгоды. Впрочем, в ходе Первой Мировой войны только счастливчикам удавалось долго воевать, тогда как основная масса доживала до первого боя, после которого отправлялась в лазарет, либо в лучший из миров. Вот и Бенжамен описал человека, чья жизнь решилась менее, нежели за сутки. Изначально лучезарный и жизнерадостный, к концу повествования — ничуть не сломленный, только уже получивший ранение, несовместимое с возможностью принимать участие в новых боях.
