This short easy-to-read book is a good read for middle elementary students. (It's just under 100 pages.)

The Ashley family travels with a missionary team to the tropical island of St. Croix where they encounter stolen money, the Clean Crusian Gang, and the death of an islander. While there, Jason learns some important lessons on how (or how not) to be a friend and a missionary.

One complaint I have about the book is that when Jason and his sister discover some marijuana cigarettes their brother Ben had in his sock, they hide them elsewhere to prevent their brother from taking them on the plane and to prevent more pain and trouble for their parents the night before their trip. This raises the question of why the parents decided (“against [their] better judgment” p.8) to let Ben go to his uncle's place in Colorado to ski rather than going with the family. (The story ends before Ben returns.)

I also wondered why the father put so much cash in his camera case and then put it with all the other cameras in a closet instead of keeping it with him. The father does accept responsibility for the stolen money and secures a loan to replace the cash.

I did read somewhere online that the author based this story on things that happened in her family.
