The Men Who Sleep With My Husband

Rate this book
1. Conspire with a hitwoman to murder my husband’s lovers.

2. Frame my husband for their murders.

3. Tell no one and to hell with the church.

This is just the beginning of a vengeful to-do list for beautiful pastor’s wife and successful salon owner Lavender Wallace. After all, it’s not every night she finds her husband of almost twenty years, Pastor Quincy Wallace, with a prominent deacon kneeling before him in the pulpit—if only it were in prayer. With God taking entirely too long, Lavender satisfies her growing contempt by teaching her husband a malicious lesson that his faith never could. But trying not to fall for the detective investigating the case of her husband’s disappearing lovers proves difficult for a lonely and scorned wife. Shielding a doting teenaged son from his father’s secrets is even harder. As old lies are exposed and a deadly plot backfires threatening to destroy those she loves most, Lavender is forced to make a life-altering decision—the bible or the bullet?

Alicia Coston lives in Washington D.C. with her husband where material for her sordid tales is plentiful. Alicia is originally from Virginia Beach and attended Old Dominion University where she majored in psychology; perhaps this is a good thing because most of her readers (and her husband) think she's out of her mind. Alicia has been an avid reader since childhood and now writes the type of books she shouldn't have been reading as a little girl. In her spare time, Alicia enjoys cardio kickboxing, drawing, writing and singing music as well as breaking her addiction to pasta. She is also a dedicated advocate of people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Alicia's first book is erotic thriller, "She's Killin' Me".

From my blog: http://ramblinro.blogspot.com/2012/10...

Are you in the mood for some trashy fun? I mean really trashy? I’m talking Dynasty* meets The Real Housewives of New Jersey on the set of the Jerry Springer Show trashy? Then you’ve got to read The Men Who Sleep with My Husband, by Alicia Coston.

I picked this book up for my kindle (for free, of course) because…well, who could resist a title like that? And in case you think the title is just overly dramatic hyperbole, let me assure you, the very first scene of the book will disabuse you of that notion (although, to be fair, the title is euphemistic – there’s not a lot of ‘sleeping’ going on). But I get ahead of myself. Let’s start with a brief synopsis, then we’ll meet some of the characters.

Brief synopsis: A woman discovers her husband is cheating on her (with men) and she takes a hit out on his lovers.

Simple enough, yes?

No. Not simple at all. This story is a big bowl full of crazy…and I mean that in the best way possible.

Almost without exception, every single character that’s introduced ends up being coincidentally connected – in some ridiculous way – to the principals of the story. It’s outlandish and barely believable and a whole lot of fun!

To start, we have Lavender (yes, her name is Lavender; I am not making this up), the central character and the cuckquean (I’m not making that up either; google it) implied in the title.

Lavender’s husband, Quincy, is cheating on her with another man. Lavender’s husband is also the pastor of their church. And the man he’s having an affair with is one of the deacons. She walks in on the deacon fellating her husband…in the pulpit…in the very first sentence of the book!!! (I told you this was awesome).

Lavender manages to keep her cool long enough to flee the church unnoticed, but not long enough to avoid rear-ending an off-duty cop while she erratically drives home. This point – where we meet the cop and his passenger – is the place to start paying attention, because it’s where the coincidental connections start.

Okay, I was going to do a vague-ish (so as not to spoil the story) breakdown of who all these people are and how they are connected, but that’ll take too long and it’s late (3:30am) and I’m lazy. So, since I highly doubt any of you are actually going to read this book, I’m just going to shout SPOILER ALERT and dive into it…

So Lavender, unwilling to face the shame and scandal if the truth came out – she is the First Lady of her church, after all – decides to hire a hitwoman (named Dulce) to kill her husband’s lovers and frame her husband for their murders…thereby creating an even bigger scandal…which would only reflect badly on him and not at all affect her or their teenaged son…? I’m not really following her logic here…

Unfortunately, the plan backfires almost right away. Dulce offs the deacon, but before Lavender can start planting the evidence Dulce gives her, the police arrest the deacon’s widow. Of course, the lead officer on the case happens to be the detective Lavender rear-ended. Oh! And she’s having an affair with him as well!

It only gets more complicated, so try to keep up!

The cop, Tai, had been having a brief fling with a girl named Zoe (his passenger when he was rear-ended) who he picked up at a bar. What he didn’t know was that Zoe was actually 17, had been dating Danny (the son of Sargeant Garcia, his hated rival) and coincidentally went to high school with Lavender’s son, Jalen (with whom she later became friends).

Also Zoe’s dad, Tom, had coincidentally gone to college with Lavender’s husband Quincy. Tom and Quincy had dated for two years until Tom’s father found out, beat the crap out of him and made them break up. Oddly enough (or maybe not so odd), at a later point in the book, Quincy and Tom reconnect, and end up kissing. Jalen walks in on them, flips out, and ends up beating the crap out of Tom as well.

(By the way, since this book is so ridiculous, I won’t get into the extremely problematic situation of having a “weak” “gay” character whose sole purpose is to serve as a literal punching bag upon which the “strong”, “conflicted” straight men can work out their issues with regards to what is and what is not “acceptable” male sexuality and behaviour)

Had enough yet? No? Good, because there’s more!

Tai – who’s falling in love with Lavender – has an “evil” ex-wife, Mena, who divorced him because he was “married” to his job and therefore not paying enough attention to her. Turns out she’d been having an affair…with his dad!! And the best part? Apparently, on more than one occasion, their daughter Sabine had heard her mom and grandfather getting it on!!

Ewwwww!

There are several other side stories that get dragged into the mix:

• Quincy’s affair with Madam Woo, the drag queen who’s also a prostitute – though Quincy doesn’t realize this until he gets a post-coital payment request (which he refuses to make, until Madame Woo and her “butch dyke” pimp, Sonny, beat the crap out of him. But don’t worry, they get their come-uppance, too. Dulce kills Woo, Sonny and Sonny’s girlfriend).

• Zoe’s therapist, Denard (who coincidentally went to high school with Quincy and had been Quincy’s first sexual experience) who shows up towards the end of the book and outs Quincy and denounces him as a hypocrite in front of his entire congregation.

• Dulce the hitwoman, first being blackmailed by her mother (Dulce takes a contract out on her and has her killed) then being “unmasked” by Tai when she coincidentally saves his daughter from an attempted kidnapping. He let’s her go – on the condition that she leave town and never come back – because all of the people she’d killed had “deserved it”.

• Lavender’s decision not to frame her husband for the murders, but rather her best friend Corrine’s philandering husband Neil, who gave Corrine HIV and, later, attempts to rape Lavender.

Whew! Okay, I’m done. There’s only so much ridiculousness even I can take. If you’re actually interested in knowing what happens at the end (here’s a hint: two characters die and a third gets a “new beginning”), I suggest waiting for the Lifetime Movie to come out. Although…since the “cast” is 95% black, it’ll probably air on BET or on Oprah’s network …probably…

Or, more realistically, Tyler Perry will make it into a feature film and he himself will play the role of Lavender in drag.

I would TOTALLY pay to see that movie!

…at any rate, I’ll keep my eyes peeled and let you know if/when they make the movie and where it’s playing…

In the meantime, stay away from this book. It’s ridiculous…

…though, if you must read it, I can “loan” it to you via my kindle…

*for those of you born after 1990, Dynasty was a prime-time soap opera on the ABC network; it was basically the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but with good real actors.

So, this book was literally everything I would hope for in a good book. It wasn't predictable, the characters were believable and relatable, and it kept me interested in what would happen next at every turn. The hit woman factor was an interesting twist to the story too which I personally found amusing. I can't imagine who or what will go on in book 2 given the ending of this installment, but I'm here for the read.

This is a must read! It was a pleasant surprise. I love how the characters were all connected. This book is a reminder everything you do has an impact on someone on (ripple effect) and because you have no control over what others do, you can't really predict the outcome of what you chose to do or chose not to do. Great read.

FIRST IMPRESSION...

The title raised an eyebrow. It was attention grabbing because the name hinted taboo. The book cover tied into the theme of the book nicely. The man in the background looks distracted while his wife is tensed with something grim looming over her. The disconnection between them is obvious and the cloak of night added to the darkness that this woman feels regarding her new reality. Between those two elements I was ready, set, go...

GLIMPSE INTO THE CHARACTERS...

Lavendar... Is the wife of a well known respected pastor who has been dining in the guilty pleasures of extramarital debaucheries. She is the typical good wife, mother, best friend and business owner. An around the way girl who is thrusted into the dark side of things when light is shed on her deceptive spouse. Her transitions from being blissfully ignorant to agonizingly aware were believable and emotionally charged.

Quincy...Was a man plaqued with a sinful desire to sleep with men. A craving that he couldn't resist even having what appeared to be the perfect family. He was a man of the cloth and it was crucial for him to keep his holy image unblemished but one mistake led to a trickle down effect of all the topsy turvy events that took place one page after the next.

Jalen... Was a young man raised correctly by two loving parents and idolized his father. His world comes crashing down when he realizes that Superman's (his daddy) Kryptonite is same sex relations. He goes through his spiral of emotions as any child would recieving devastating news on someone who they viewed in such high esteem.

Dulce...She is a bad muthaf*cka. Her career choice to be a contract killer was appropriate given her back story. Her personality in each situation she was in was well meticulated.

Tai...When this detective was introduced in the very early on, I had no clue to what pivotal role he would play, how and why but it was made clear and indeed interesting.

HIGH POINTS...

Simply put, there was no stone left unturned. The author satisfied the quench that was developed with the need to know what would take place next. The timing of reveal was perfect, the characters stayed true to their personalities, and although this was fictionalized you can imagine the reality of this story taking place.

KILL SCENES...

No part of this book was a let down. (Putting fingers to lips and creating a starburst effect) MUAH! This book was magnifico.

THE CONCLUSION...

This book was well crafted from start to finish. Six degrees of seperation was identified in this read. She made the connections come together effortlessly. From Zoe, Madam Woo, Sonny, Mena, Corrine, Danny, etc. This author's writing skills are impeccable. Her use of words were outstanding. I recall a time when you had to have a dictionary on stand-by because the author introduced you to a new vernacular. This author brought me back to those times, when being an author meant you were certified, outstanding. This was my first book but it will not be the last. Next book by this author that I will be reading is "She's Killin' Me". I will be on that one.

I have a GET or SH*T list.

This book is a definite GET. (This book recieves 5 torches)

Alicia Coston...Your book has just been blazed!!! Your joint is on fiyah!

I got this book free from Amazon for my Kindle.

Quincy and Lavender Wallace have the perfect marriage, or do they?!
High school sweethearts married and have a kid, Quincy is a successful Pastor and Lavender is the first lady of the church. Their son Jalen is about to graduate high school and seems doing very well for a kid his age.
Then Lavender witnesses an act no woman should see her husband engaged it that has her enraged. She then decides to have her revenge. So she hires a specialist to do the work for her.
Plotting to get rid of her husband's lovers and framing him for the deeds.
But she didn't expect Tai to enter her life and complicate things, specially that he is the detective that is investigating the murders.

I don't want to give a lot of the story away, because it has many twists and turns.
What I loved about this book is the idea of the six degrees of separation that I believe is quite true and that the world is truly small. By having the past always catching up on you weather good or bad.
I liked the idea that I get to read the story from all the characters point of views, and that it's not going back and forth. I got to know what Quincy, Lavender, Jalen, Tai and The Magician were thinking and why each was doing so, with enough backstory for each to understand that.

It was a fast ride that I didn't want to stop till it was finished!

I can't say I was expecting the end, it was a shock to me but maybe it was for the best. Tragic things happen in real life too.

This was a first for me by this author and I will be sure to check out what other books she has :)

Before I started this book, I was skeptical. I didn't know how in depth this author would go. So I took a chance, plus a friend of mine let me read it. So far, she has given me good books. When I started reading it, I was flabbergasted, it captivated me to read more. I was sitting at work indulge in this book.

As a writer, and as a fluent reader, the first key to a good book is to have a great first chapter. Most times I give a book 3 chapters. If it don't bring it by the 3rd chapter; I am out. This book was good from beginning to end.

Some things that I like:
.I like that the author didn't go in detail about the sex engagement between the men.
.The tempo was kept till the end.
I got the chance to guess, but was not all the time right.
It was done in a way that a person like you and I may have reacted, except the character of Lavender use more integrity in her decision making that you have to respect.

The only thing that I would take away world be the rush decision to include kidpnapping part in it. It was put in the book, like a rush thought. like the author was going through a writer's block.

I try not to give the story away. When I think about a review, I hope that other readers gives reviews about the story instead of reinstating the summary. We give too much away, I have got to admit that the reviews that gave too much info has been my decision not to read a book. Hint Hint others.

This book surprised the hell out of me. I thought it was going to be a stupid short read and kinda perverted, but it was very good and very in depth with each characters ongoing involvement.

It is a touchy situation, A pastor, who has always been gay, and gives into his desires, even tho he is married to a beautiful woman and has a child.

The wife is upset and so she hires a hitman, but not to kill her husband, to kill the lovers and frame him, but so much more happens, and there is a second book and I am not sure if I am going to read it.. I probably will.

IT was tragic, and sad, and sexy in parts. This reads more like a drama on Lifetime for Women, than anything else.

The writing is average and annoying in parts and they made sure to describe things so we know they are all black, (brother, mocha skin, peanut butter complexion) and there was a lot of musical references of today, and they even mentioned Facebook. The term "triflin" was used a lot, as in "you triflin mutha fucker" kinda lame. But whatever. People spoke trashy in this book and it didn't really match up with the religious part of who some of the characters were supposed to be.

My version on the Kindle was formatted strange in spots too. The font was inconsistent and the lines were skewed in parts.

All in all it kept my attention and I read it in 2 days.

I had this book on my kindle for a very long time, mainly because the cover never caught my attention. One of the members of my book club recommended it and I promised I would check it out and I am so glad that I did. I can't believe that I had this 5 star book unread on my kindle for so long. "The Men who slept with my husband" started off with a bang and the drama and suspense was non stop. I'm used to focusing on urban fiction but fortunately this book was so much more than that and there was an underlying crime drama element to it. The story focused on a pastor's family and how his shenanigans affected everyone and everything in his life. There was surprise twist at every corner and eventually all the characters and their stories tied in together which was nice. I literally hated that this book ended and I felt as if I was watching a Sunday Lifetime movie. I will be looking for other books by this author and I highly recommend that you do not judge this book by it's cover.

This book was great, sick and a bit twisted, but I loved all of it. Whenever I thought I knew what was going to happen, something else happened that through me completely off. I didn't see what happened in the end coming. During many discovered elements of the book my mouth hung open in disbelief. I was never bored and looked forward to knowing the end. Overall this book was a great read. I would recommend it to anyone over the age 16 who loves a good mystery, with interested plots and sub-twists. It's amazing what people go through in this book, that identifies with real life events. Great job Alicia Coston. I will looking for your other books and reading them all.

2.5 stars

I picked this one by virtue of the fascinating title and premise and the fact that it's set in Norfolk, where I used to live. I don't think I can describe this story without using the words "epic rollercoaster soap opera that Tyler Perry wished he'd written." Seriously, this one has everything - infidelity, murder, HIV, dark secrets...everything but incest. For a book centered around a church, everybody seems to do everything but pray.

What jarred my complete reading pleasure was the style - the use of multiple first person POV didn't work for me. If you want a speeding train beach read, though...holy cow.

Yes I am giving this book 5 stars. Alicia kept me engaged from beginning to end. OMG!!! Although there were a lot of characters she was consistent from their introduction to their actual role they played. If you are looking for a book that will give you drama, mystery, laughter, romance and tears this is the one. Didn't really know what I was getting from the title just that it was interesting enough to get my attention and happy to say that it kept it all the way. I will definitively look for what other books are out there from this author.

This is the definition of a FIVE STAR read! From the very start, this book pulls readers into the lives of the characters. Families are torn apart, relationships are strengthened, other relationships are destroyed, and individuals go through experiences they never anticipated. Once I started reading, I didn't stop. Page by page, I was drawn in, curious to know what happened next. I'd definitely recommend this book to others.

More like 3.5 stars. The book was well written for the number of characters in the book. Didn't care for the ending. At times lost track of which character's voice I was reading at that time. A lot going on but it forces you to keep reading to the very end.
