Fascinating! This book couldn't suck me in more than it has, even if it tried. I especially like pages 104-107, and all the pages that cover Hwy 395.
All joking aside, this atlas is the better choice between it and the red So & Central Cali Atlas & Gazetteer by Delorme. The Red gazetteer has the state split into 2 volumes, and it also depicts contour lines (which is fun), but this Black atlas is easier to read, the places of interest are marked so they are more noticeable on the page (which is so important), and the whole state is conveniently covered by a single book. You really only NEED contour lines if you're hiking, in which case you shouldn't be using a road atlas. Shading is perfectly effective in this case. I spent a lot of time comparing the two, and I definitely liked Black better. I did similar comparisons with some other states, such as Utah and Arizona, and the differences between Black and Red in those states is even more obvious, Black winning the contest all the way!
If you're not sure, choose a geographic location that you have actually visited, and compare them in the two books. You'll see the difference. In Utah and Arizona, some of the roads in Red are barely even represented, in comparison to Black.
I love love love my black Benchmark atlas. It has been with me up and down this state several times. Don't leave town without it!
