Every flag is accompanied by a description of its origins and history, and an explanation of its significance. The book includes details of the flags of states which have recently declared their independence from the former USSR and Yugoslavia. Explanations and descriptions are also given for heraldic flags, religious flags, flags of official organizations and flags as signals.

Perfect for subway rides and bathroom stops because of its size and the brevity of its entries, this book introduces readers to the flags (in full colour - gasp!) of over 200 of the world's countries, explaining each one's origins, history, and significance.

The entries are presented by region - such as western Europe, Scandinavia, eastern Europe, etc - and then alphabetically within their respective regions. This, along with brief historical data for each flag (& country, by extension) helps bolster one's geo-political & historical awareness.

The book also provides an introduction to flags in general, such as their history, their shapes & parts, their symbolism & uses, as well as a glossary as to flag-related terms.

For the purpose of this review, the 1999 edition of the book was used.
