R. M. Ballantyne was a Scottish writer of juvenile fiction.
Born Robert Michael Ballantyne in Edinburgh, he was part of a famous family of printers and publishers. At the age of 16 he went to Canada and where he served for six years with the Hudson's Bay Company. He returned to Scotland in 1847, and published his first book the following year, Hudson's Bay: or Life in the Wilds of North America. For some time he was employed by Messrs Constable, the publishers, but in 1856 he gave up business for literature, and began the series of adventure stories for the young with which his name is popularly associated.
I specifically chose this book because 1) I saw that no one else had written any reviews of it's content anywhere that I could find and I like to give my kids Ballantyne and Henty books to read for school and 2) Ballantyne is a fun read.
This is a fairly fast read with a good dose of real history. It is the story of the Eddystone Lighthouses near the opening of the English Channel. It follows the basic outline I could find with a quick internet search--but it's a lot more fun to read. It gives a good description of building techniques from the day too.
It may be a little hard for a younger reader because the dialect is spelled out in the conversation so you get interesting things like "hanythingk" for "anything" occasionally--but don't let that put you off of the story. It's not that complicated to understand and I think a reader with at least a 4th grade ability should be able to tackle it well enough.
Another will written seafaring adventures thriller short story by R. M. Ballantyne about the building of a lighthouse on the Plymouth England coast three times and the men who did it. I would highly recommend this novella to readers of historical novels 👍🔰. Enjoy the adventure of reading all kinds of different types of novels and books 📚. 2022 👒🏰😉🏡
