大坂天満の寒天問屋の主・和助は、仇討ちで父を亡くした鶴之輔を銀二貫で救う。大火で焼失した天満宮再建のための大金だった。引きとられ松吉と改めた少年は、商人の厳しい躾と生活に耐えていく。料理人嘉平と愛娘真帆ら情深い人々に支えられ、松吉は新たな寒天作りを志すが、またもや大火が町を襲い、真帆は顔半面に火傷を負い姿を消す…。

Superficial. Maybe the author studied the background and culture of the era really well but unfortunately her language doesn't fit. It's too light and lacks insight and subtlety. All the characters and situations are depicted like posing and as predetermined. I felt like I was reading a bland teen novel but good ol' Eiji Yoshikawa and Ryotaro Shiba, whose works were not just entertaining and whose language had beauty and depth to tell stories from the feudal era.
