I am going to try to start adding some more books from my childhood that I have been wanting to introduce, but have been too busy or procrastinating on. The key books that I have been procrastinating on are the Black Americans of Achievement series. The series of biographies that came out of this publishing line introduced me to a lot of my history and culture and was written for my age group of that time anyway. These were the first legitimate "prose" books I read regularly (meaning these books were mostly words and few on pictures pictures). This book on hometown hero Duke Ellington was chief among them.

These books felt important, but were so readable for an elementary school student like myself. It did not feel like it was being dumbed-down and we were able to read more than "children's books."
