Sellin's overview of Antonin Artaud's theoretical writings and his dramaturgical approach provide a fantastic vantage to Artaud's seminal work in Surrealist theatre — and as he called it The Theatre of Cruelty.

I've started and stopped reading Artaud's The Theatre and Its Double several times over the years. I've always found it a bit rich and difficult to immersive myself, but now I might be able to pick it up again and understand his writing at a deeper level with Sellin's work as my introduction and guide. I also had the good fortune to see a production of Artaud's play The Cenci and experienced the live effect of Artaud's concepts as a member of the audience, which is also, perhaps, the most engaging and experiential way to comprehend the implementation of what Artaud considers 'cruelty' or the synonymous phrase 'destruction-humor'.
