Barbara Keiler was born on April 7th. She started telling stories before shecould write. She was four when her sister, Carolyn, stuffed a crayon intoher hand and taught her the alphabet, and she's been writing ever since.

Barbara is a graduate of Smith College, where she learned to aim for thestars, and she received a master's degree in creative writing from BrownUniversity, where she took aim at a good-looking graduate student in thechemistry department and wound up marrying him. She says: "Before myhusband and I were married, I had a job in California and he was working onhis Ph.D. in Rhode Island. I became ill, and he hopped on a plane and flewacross the country to be with me. Neither of us had any money, but he saidhe simply couldn't concentrate on his research, knowing I was three thousandmiles away and facing a serious health problem all by myself. He stayed fortwo weeks, until I was pretty well recovered. That he would just drop whathe was doing, put his life on hold and race to my side told me how much heloved me. After that, I knew this was the man I wanted to marry."

Barbara has received writing fellowships from the Shubert Foundation and theNational Endowment for the Arts, and has taught at colleges and universitiesaround the country. She has also written several plays that have beenprofessionally staged at regional theaters in San Francisco, Washington, D.C.,Connecticut and off-off-Broadway.

Since her first romance novel's publication in 1983 as Ariel Berk. Shewrote one novel as Thea Frederick, and since 1985 she writes asJudith Arnold. Barbara has sold more than 70 novels, with eight millioncopies in print worldwide. She has recently signed a contract with MIRABooks. Her first MIRA novel will appear in 2001. She has received severalawards from Romantic Times Magazine, including awards for the Best HarlequinAmerican Romance of the Year, Best Harlequin Superromance of the Year, BestSeries Romantic Novel of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Certificate ofMerit for Innovative Series Romance. She has also been a finalist for theGolden Medallion Award and the RITA Award for Romance Writer of America. Hernovel Barefoot in the Grass has appeared on the recommended reading listsdistributed by cancer support services at several hospitals.

Barbara lives in a small town not far from Boston, Massachusetts, New England with her husband, two teenage sons, and a guinea pig named Wilbur. Her sister Carolyn died of breast cancer in 1998.

Este libro no tiene nada de malo, es más, creo que para el momento en que fue escrito, fue innovador, porque trataba de mostrar que las mujeres son iguales a los hombres, y tanto los unos como los otros tienen derecho a ser éxitos hombres y mujeres de negocios, también que solo por el hecho de ser mujer no se tiene porqué tener un instinto maternal, o ser una excelente criada. Creo que este libro pudo tratar de romper un poco el estigma de mujer que debe quedarse en casa y ser la complaciente esposa de un hombre.

Pero las cosas como son, solo he leído un puñado de páginas y se me cerraban los ojos. Me aburría leyendo el libro, y no es porque Ariel escriba mal, es más, su pluma es buena, cuidada, pero no me ha dicho nada. No he conectado con la historia, ni con los personajes.

Algo que he encontrado sumamente contradictorio es que Valerie diga mucho que no tiene ninguna idea sobre bebés, que no le interesan en absoluto, y solo con ver al pequeño Michael ya se imagina teniendo su propia prole. Otro detalle ha sido que, sin gustarle los bebés, nada más llegar a la oficina de Brian, le ha quitado al bebé, y ha tratado de dormirle, y después, él le pide que vayan a comprar juntos una cuna, pañales, juguetes, etc, y ella acepta corriendo. Para no gustarle Brian, Valerie se comporta de una forma extraña, y para no tener interés alguno por los bebés, es ver al pequeño y ya tiene que ser ella quien se encargue de él. ¿Hola? ¿El bebé no es de Brian? Detalles que no encajan absolutamente nada.

Me ha costado creer lo que Ariel narraba en su historia. No me parece natural la situación en la que se embarcan los protagonistas. No he visto química entre Brian y Valerie. No me han dicho nada ninguno de los dos. Son dos personajes insípidos. Quizás ambos tengan mucho que aportarse al otro, pero sinceramente, no me importa.

Ni siquiera quiero saber como evoluciona su romance o su nueva oportunidad con ese niño desconocido en la ecuación. No quiero saber quién es el bebé, si es el hijo de Brian, tampoco quiero saber quién es Carol, si es su ex novia, su hermana, o lo que sea, no siento curiosidad alguna. Tampoco quiero saber porqué durante cuatro años se han odiado mutuamente cuando el día que se conocieron echaron un polvo, tampoco quiero saber si al final del relato alguno de los dos jurará amor eterno y todo acabará con Valerie embarazada y trabajando en la oficina, como mujer independiente y feminista que es, o si Brian superará sus ideas sobre las mujeres y se dignará a aprender a cuidar a un bebé y cocinar.

No me interesa el libro. No despierta curiosidad alguna en mí. Y tampoco me apetece buscar cualquier otro libro de Ariel, definitivamente, creo que sus historias no son para mí. Tan solo eso.
