Peyton Place was set in Massachusetts, but Scarecrow is set one state away in Sudwich, Connecticut. The settings are similar: small towns brimming with secrets, gossip and scandals. Reading Scarecrow is a bit like coming into the middle of a long-running soap opera, but author Eaton K. Goldthwaite neatly and quickly brings the reader up to speed on who's who along with the past and present goings-on in town.

Those goings-on are soon topped off by the murder of two well-known citizens. Are they connected? Do they relate to the strangely garbed man seen in front of the post office? Lt. Dickerson from New York City is assigned to the case and soon finds no shortage of suspects.

Goldthwaite presents an entertaining tale with deep characters and attention to detail (Sudwich very much comes alive). The tale is made all the more interesting by the Dell mapback (which for some reason Goodreads uses instead of the front cover). The outcome of the mystery is a surprise, but the explanation at the end ties all of the incidents and clues together.
