So, I agreed to review this book NOT because I need to lose weight (if anything I need to gain weight), but because I need to learn how to exercise. And I find that often weight loss books have great tips on exercise and motivation.
That said, I thought this book was great! At first, I kind of thought it was repetitive. She seemed to just be saying over and over again - if you want to lose weight, you have to change your mindset. Think about things one day at a time. As I continued reading, though, I realized just how important it was for her to be repetitive like that. If you say something to yourself over and over again, it eventually begins to feel true. As I read over and over again, in slightly different words, it eventually began to REALLY sink in. In the beginning, I understood what she was saying - by the end, I felt and knew with all of my being what she what she was saying. Knowing that Chantel herself lost 200 pounds with this very method made the words sink in that much more.
More than that, IT MADE ME FEEL MOTIVATED! And I think that, for an exercise/weight loss book, motivating someone has to be up there as one of the most important necessities.
Another positive was that she was able to constantly bring in examples from her own life that not only made it easy to visualize what she was saying but that also made it interesting and easy to read as a book and not just a weight-loss guide.
She also gave some great exercises that one can do, which is something else I think is a necessity in a weight loss book. Unfortunately, most of her exercises involved a medicine ball. The fact is, a lot of people don't like exercising. So while working with a medicine ball is great for those of you that don't mind exercising, for me it just makes me feel like I'm actually exercising. I need to be tricked into breaking a sweat (which is why my martial arts classes are perfect for me), and, even one day at a time, it's hard for me to force myself to do something that I HATE to do (exercise). Still, her exercises were simple and doable.
There were a couple things, though, that I didn't really love about the book. She mentions at some point that you CAN be vegetarian while following her method, but she really doesn't give any tips how. She also says that, if you are vegetarian, you need to eat lots of cheese and dairy. This seems counter-intuitive to me, since ALL the studies show how unhealthy and free-radical forming dairy products are. I'm a vegan, and there was not a SINGLE meal in her recipe section that could have been eaten by a vegan.
Lastly, she asks us to start with a fast. I personally wouldn't have trouble doing this, but I know people that have tried to fast, even for a day, and ended up sick, passed out, at the hospital. Fasting isn't for everyone.
So there we have it. I unfortunately didn't receive the book early enough to have had a chance to put her method to work, though I do think the idea of taking things one day at a time, never thinking of the future, is quite a good one. And I'm looking forward to trying it out!

Well, I'm pretty sure that everyone has at one time or another made a New Year's resolution to lose weight, eat better, and exercise. I know I have multiple times but somewhere down the line I sabotage myself and give up. There are several reasons why I really liked what the author was saying and I believe that if I follow her steps, I WILL be successful:

* She was over 250 pounds- she has been there!!
* I like the philosophy of One Day at a Time!! Don't plan out for 6 months....just be successful today!
* She concentrates on the inside and faith (not religion) How many of you have seen the new reality show with the winner of a past Biggest Loser? He gained back all of his weight...why? I believe it's because they only concentrated on the outside and not the emotional part of eating.
* You don't have to spend money!!!! No prepackaged foods...just a better way to eat!
* Stop setting up HUGE goals, and comparing myself with others...if I continue to do this I will not be successful. Instead, break big goals down into doable steps. Only compare my life today with MY life of yesterday or the day before.
* God validates me.....not other people!!!
* Stop dwelling in the past! Focus on today!

If you've found yourself struggling to lose weight and to keep it off, I would totally recommend this book to you. I'm very pleased that I signed up to do this book tour because I want to change my life and with this book, Chantel's website, desire, I know I can be successful!!!

Do you struggle with weight? Have you just given up all hope of ever being a healthy size? Chantel Hobbs has developed a way for you to lose all the weight you want and keep it off for life. The plan is based upon applying the simple mechanics of weight loss (burn more calories than consumed) but keeping the focus on just one day at a time. Chantel says that what derails most weight loss efforts are the demoralization brought about by making mistakes and by creating unrealistic goals. In her books she helps you work through these issues and provides you with tools to achieve the weight lifestyle you deserve.

In One Day Way, Chantel speaks about her own struggles with weight and how she overcame them. She also provides real life examples of people who have tried her weight loss plan and have succeeded. Through her book, learn how to break your destructive eating and exercise habits. Learn how to change your “fat” mind to a “thin” mind. Learn how to build a new life and body just one day at a time.

Lamenting about the piece of pie you had last night should never cause you to give up on yourself. With the One Day Way it never will. Yesterday is history and tomorrow hasn’t happened yet. Chantel Hobbs will show you how to set goals for only today and how to celebrate your daily successes. Through one day at a time you will achieve a healthy lifestyle and a healthy weight.

I initially chose this book because I have been working to regain my healthy lifestyle and lose the 10 or so pounds that just keep hanging on. I have read my share of "diet" books over the years, and I have lost 50 pounds and kept it off for years now. I figured this book would be like all the others.

Well, I was wrong. I was concerned at first because the Christian element seemed to be neglected. But I was thankfully proven wrong. She emphasized the spiritual element very clearly at all the right places--even ended with a solid salvation message.

I think what sets this book apart is that Chantel continues to emphasize doing it one day at a time. What happened yesterday--whether you messed up or did well--is truly irrelevant to today. Today you need to make the decision to change your life. Setting long-term goals often sets you up to fail--especially when you do not see the results you want. Sometimes we spend too much time celebrating our successes and neglecting the present as well. When you take things one day at a time, however, all that really matters is today. And if you mess up, you know that tomorrow you have a fresh new start.

I like the fact that she has some simple meal plans, and I really love the strength training exercises in her book--30 of them, I think. They are simple and attainable. I appreciate the fact that she says you need to continue challenging yourself on a daily basis. I agree with much of what she says in the area of fitness and health.

There are some points of disagreement from my perspective, but they are small. I do not agree with fasting for me. I know it is good, but I am generally not able to do it. I could see doing one meal, but not a whole day. I also do not agree with cardio 5 times a week no matter what. I do 3-4, and it has worked for me. I also do not agree with keeping track of your progress for the day and tearing it up. I am a goal-oriented person, and I like to see from whence I have come.

In conclusion, the thing that really struck me in the book is that the principles she uses for health/dieting cross over into other areas as well. Any time we make changes in our lives, it is hard. I think that when you make a commitment that today you are going to or not going to do thus and such--and you only make the commitment for that day--the goal finally seems doable. I have been putting her principles into practice as I have been working on other habits in my life, and it works!

I chose to give this book a 5-star rating because I think it is the best diet book I have ever read. She is not promoting a program; she is promoting a lifestyle. And I cannot agree with her more on that point!

Chantel is no stranger to the weight-loss struggle game. She lost around 200 lbs, so she understands the struggles and torment we go through as dieters. (I say we… I do mean me. I’ve had weight issues pretty much my whole life.. I’ve been everywhere from a size 3 – size 28; let me say not fun.)

This is Chantel’s second book. It is called “The One Day Way“. One thing that Chantel does well is she talks about the real issues behind the weight — the triggers that set us off. It reminds me of what Danny from season 8 of the Biggest Loser said this year about figuring out what controls us because if we do not do that we will be back heavier than ever. I’m not sure how much of this I have actually thought about before and it has my mind spinning, I mean I often say I eat when I’m depressed, but it’s more to it than that. I mean why do these things constantly affect me, and am I really depressed that often? Or maybe it’s something more specific than that? Anyhow, like I said this book really got my mind questioning my motives for my weight struggles.

This plan is for more than just weight-loss, it’s about living life completely. It is based on the “One Day” at a time theme, and letting go of our past (even if it is as recent as yesterday!)

What I like about this book: I was half way through it and I found myself thinking several times:

“One Day Way… if I can just last through the day it will be okay.. if I just control my tongue for the next few hours it will be tomorrow and I’ll be okay! If I just resist that for the next hour, it will be okay!”

And you know what? I did it!!! I was so excited. I mean not just on weight, but on other things in my life that bother me because it’s all a chain reaction right? I get frustrated with this and that, and than I end up splurging on food because I’m in a bad frame of mind and than I have made a bad health choice and than I can not seem to bail myself out. I mean seriously, I started reading this book and didn’t get it. I didn’t understand why she was chatting so much about our brains and honestly by the end, I felt better and I feel motivated to work harder and follow the extremely simple idea and make it work this time! The first 2/3 of the book focus on the issues behind our weight-loss and only the last 1/3 is on how to do the “work”, which really isn’t even the hard stuff!

So, would I recommend this book? Absolutely! I think it hits the battle from another angle that so many of us don’t think about. I think it covers more than weightloss and will encourage all around improvement.

I love this book! I'll admit I'm not one to ever pick up a book that I think is going to be motivational. But I chose this one for a reason. Three years ago my husband and I went on a life change (uh..yeah, so we thought) and began eating healthier foods and getting regular, daily intense exercise. He lost 70 lbs!! I lost 25 lbs.!! We each met our goal and were so excited. We actually kept the weight off for a year. Then began the slide...not pretty. In the last 2 yrs I have regained all 25 lbs, and he has regained 30lbs. We have said for months that we need to go back to healthier foods and exercise. UGH! Then I saw this book up for review and it was like an epiphany :) Ok, maybe not an epiphany.

But it was time for some MOTIVATION! I'm telling you this book is it. As I read along I kept saying “YES!” Now, a lot of the principles she talks about I already know, but sometimes you just need some MoJo and Chantel is motivating.

Stressing Faith, Food, & Fitness reaffirms what I have long believed about weight loss. You can't do it without Christ. Daily take up your cross and follow Him! I know it's not the same thing, but the principle applies. It IS one day at a time. If you are constantly checking the scale, charts, and personal eating journals, the whole process can get very discouraging. Especially if you only lose a ½ pound on a given day. She encourages you to take a look at what really is going in your life and make a conscious choice, EVERY DAY, to focus on TODAY and what you can do to achieve your goal on this One-Day Way.

Practical eating and exercise is discussed and examples given. She talks about how we need to stop freaking out over what happened yesterday and focus on changing TODAY! I am SO ready! Come along with me on this journey of getting fit ~ body, mind & spirit!

I was provided a copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah for review purposes in exchange for my honest opinion. No other compensation was received.

There are a lot of diet books on the shelves, but this is the first one I have read where it is stressed to just take one day at a time. Just stick to a plan and count calories today. If you mess up, don't worry. Tomorrow is a brand new day and you can get it right tomorrow.

The one thing in this book that I didn't agree with is fasting for a day. I was going to try it but got talked out of it. It was good in a way that I was going to try it, because it made me really savor what I did eat (which was very healthy too).

Chantel tells you to challenge yourself and instead of (in my case) eating a candy bar or two every day like usual, instead of doing that go for a walk to take your mind off it somehow. Also, the first few bites that you take of something are the best and after that, you are just eating because something is in front of you. Don't just eat something out of habit.

P. 103
Food is necessary for survival, which is why it's one of the most difficult addictions to control. The fear of not having enough food makes humans and animals do unthinkable things to protect their supply.

Another part of this book is something that I heard before and need to keep in the back of my mind at all times. Its the fact that we need to learn to eat to live and not live to eat! Food is fuel and not the meaning of Life.

Also, sometimes it's better to eat the same thing from day to day. It's easier to count your calories and being bored with food robs food of its emotional power over you.

P. 144
It's ironic that we have all these gadgets designed to save time and make our lives easier, and because of them, we now have to schedule sweating!

If you are looking for a new view on losing weight, this book is for you! My friend Staci let me borrow this book, and I am thankful that she did!

The One Day Way is a book that outlines not a diet, but a new way of thinking. The basic premise is to not worry about yesterday, tomorrow, or six months from now. Ditch the 6-month eating plan and focus on today, right now, this moment, will you make a good choice or a poor one?

Overall I LOVE the concept in the book. Forget about yesterday's ice cream or next week's pot luck dinner, focus on what you do today, then repeat tomorrow. I love the idea of baby steps to health. If you've eaten cookies every afternoon for a year, and you don't eat cookies today, then she encourages you to celebrate your success and then try to repeat it tomorrow. I know I'm not the type of person who can be eating cheeseburgers and pizza one day and an asparagus and Brussels sprouts smoothie the next never to look back. So this type of book is an encouragement to me.

However, I felt like she went from a baby-step mentality to her chapters with meal plans and exercise examples with an attitude of do it this way or you won't be able to reach and maintain your goals. One bridge chapter of "First try to give up a food your attached to. Then try some exercise for a month. Then... And once you've gotten some discipline, control and successes under your belt move forward into these more restrictive type of habits." would have made the book five stars to me.

I would still highly recommend this book to others who struggle with their weight and are tired of trying diet after diet. Because after all, she's not teaching a diet, she's teaching you to completely change the way you live... just one day at a time.

This is the first time I've ever been asked to review a diet book. Since I'm a health food fiend and love exercising I thought I'd undertake this task. The structure of my review is a little cumbersome since this is the first book of this sort I've done.

The first 46 pages are introductory, even though they are broken up into chapters. These chapters are repetitive and often boring. However, the message within the pages is interesting. It is a common thing that most people forget when setting huge goals of any type: “Take one day at a time.”

Honestly, after 46 pages I was pretty much bored out of my mind and couldn't read any more. I did flip through to look for the recipes and exercises. There were guides on what to eat, but no real recipes. There were several, basic exercises that are good for beginners, but the images to go with the exercise are small and a little fuzzy, so possibly not useful for those needing more images and less in the way of words.

The message is solid, but the diet advice is not. I'm not enamoured by fasting, as it deprives the body of nutrients it needs to function. Not only does Hobbs suggest fasting for an entire day at the beginning of her diet, but as well as skipping one meal a week. She calls this a fasting lifestyle. What she impresses upon for this is that you are fasting from an addiction for a short period of time, whether it is food, drugs, or what have you. She claims this will give you mental, spiritual and emotional clarity.

On one hand, I liked this book because it did not say "work out this much every day, do these exercises, eat this food, etc, etc, etc" (But on the other hand - sometimes that is what I need personally.) I am not saying that she doesn't give you some exercises and some recipes - but I believe the focus of this book is changing the way we view weight loss and the way we approach it. This is a great book to use as a source of encouragement - and not just for losing weight. She talks about breaking things down into smaller bites - something achievable. Not that you shouldn't have larger goals, but don't make them so big as to be defeated before you even start.

Chantel also has a great approach to each day. You must treat each day separately. Forget about yesterday. If you ate that 3 course meal and had a double dessert - that was yesterday - don't let it affect today. Also, don't worry about what you are going to do this weekend because your in-laws are coming to town and they are going to expect to eat and drink. Today, deal with today.

You need to start to develop new ways of thinking and incorporating these in your life (see how it applies to more than just food?) I love the chapter where she talks about food being fuel and not your friend. How many times have I turned to that chocolate bar because I was angry or upset? More than I can tell you!

So, if you are looking for a weight loss "coach" - then definitely give this book a try.

The One Day Way by Chantel Hobbs is not radically different from many other diet books. The diet is a 1600 calorie a day diet along with exercise. There are sample menus and a good section of exercises with photos that anyone can do at home with a medicine ball and resistance band. She also suggests fasting as part of the diet which is something I don't agree with.

The main difference in her approach is to change the way you think. Instead of setting out to diet for a certain amount of time or until you loose a certain amount which can feel overwhelming she breaks it down to one day at a time. You focus on each day individually and if you blow it there is always tomorrow. I liked this part of her plan. Don't dwell on the past just try to do your best each day and only focus on that day. Don't beat yourself up over a failure just move on to the next day and keep going.

While her advice is good I found it difficult to get inspired. The first few chapters keep telling the reader what she is going to explain in detail later on over and over. It also seemed like I was expected to have read her previous book and be familiar with her story. I found myself getting bored at the beginning and skipping through to see the diet and exercises.

"Don't get stuck in guilt or regret or blame. Choose to be extraordinary, and learn how to see each day's trials and disappointments as serendipity instead of setbacks." pg. 84

Weight loss is a struggle for many of us. In this book, Chantel Hobbs lays out some practical suggestions to help us on our way. It isn't about dieting. It isn't about blame. It is about change and the process of building what you want. Nothing worth doing is easy, but the suggestions and principles in this book encourage the reader that they are not alone and that they can do it. The three essential building materials of this book are faith, food, and fitness. The faith section deals with believing that you can make things happen. The food section has some wonderful meal plans. The fitness section is filled with exercises laid out in easy to follow instructions and photographs. The three building blocks will help you reach, and maintain, your goal of a healthy life.

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to continuing with the principles. I found the exercises challenging, but easy to follow; and the meal plans were realistic. I also liked her "Ten Commandments" - boy, do they make sense! If you have had a hard time losing weight or even believing that you can, this book will be worth your time and energy. Thank you to the Blogging for Books program for my copy of the book!

Setting a goal that seems so far in the distance to achieve is often discouraging. That's where the concept of “The One Day Way” comes in. Instead of looking ahead to fit into a bikini for the beach next summer, look fantastic for your 20th high school reunion, or even be able to wear a certain dress to the company Christmas party, those goals are sometimes so long in the future or you have so much to lose that you give up before then.

What Chantel Hobbs teaches is taking one day at a time. Just for today you will eat healthy. Just for today you can fit in 30 minutes of cardio. It doesn't seem as daunting to think you will stay on track just for today. But when you start thinking of all those days between now and the bikini, that's often where failure lies, rarely in just today.

There are 31 exercises using a medicine ball included in this book as well as sample menus.

Overall, rather than a diet book, I would call this an encouragement to lose weight book. You can do this for today. Forget about yesterday, and don't worry about tomorrow. Just do this TODAY!

I found this book every difficult to get into, it seemed to repeat itself over and over again and I hadn't read any others of hers and I felt a bit lost. I would agree with her that looking at a huge task is difficult and that cutting it into little day to day segments will make it easier to handle.

Weight loss is a goal of most people now days and it is for some a huge task, one they feel sure to fail, this book helps you realize that you can only handle one day at a time and to celebrate on those days that you make it and let the days you don't go away.

I like the idea of fasting as part of a diet, I think it is a great way to help you realize that food is not controlling you and that you can make it without it for a day and then eat healthy the next. The overall impression of the book is that it is a good idea and she lays out the steps, but it is pretty much like most diet books.

The One Day Way, by Chantel Hobbs, Waterbrook Press, 2011, Paperback, 2009, 240 Pages, ISBN-10: 0307458784, $14.99

Do you struggle with weight loss issues? Have you tried every kind of diet, from Dr. Agatston’s Southbeach regimen to Nutrisystem’s home delivery without lasting results? Or if pounds are successfully lost do former bad eating habits return when you tire of calculating calories, carbs or sometimes the food begins to taste all the same? Then there’s the issue of exercise and developing a workout routine that’s enjoyable and fits your busy schedule

Sometimes, despite all your efforts, the defeating yo-yo cycle of weight loss only to regain pounds begins, often with even more pounds added. Mirrors are again avoided, clothes are bought only when necessary and low self-esteem issues continue.

Chantel Hobbs writes that it doesn’t have to be that way…Full Review: http://tinyurl.com/75zk2qs

If you have failed to lose weight using popular weight loss books, diets, and methods – the “One Day Way” may be your answer.

By breaking down personal goals using the “One Day” mindset, weight loss and lifestyle changes become more manageable. This book spends a lot of time dealing with the “mental” aspect of dieting, weight loss and healthier food choices, as well as offering a couple of beginning meal plans.

The first meal plan helps you eat for weight loss while the second meal plan shows you how to maintain your ideal weight. The author also includes 31 strength training exercises using only an exercise ball and/or resistance bands.

I liked that she added detailed exercise photos which show just how simple the exercises are and also proves that you don’t need an expensive gym membership or fancy home equipment to get a high quality, effective workout.

The introduction and first three chapters of The One Day Way were enough for me to make this a worthwhile book to read. If you are in need of internal motivation to get or keep on your weight loss, fitness or healthy eating regimen these chapters will greatly help with that.

As a weight loss coach myself I found we had some similar ideas in those first few chapters. She focuses on changing your thinking habits, just like I do. She focuses on progress instead of doing things perfectly, just like I do. I really appreciated her views here.

The one-day way was a very insightful book and is great for helping inspire people to take the dieting process one day at a time. The only thing I didn't like was that she didn't present diet options for vegans and although the exercises she provides are very budget friendly (you just need an medicine ball and a resistance band), I feel she should have addressed exercises that very overweight people can do as well as those who are able to exercise normally (getting down on the floor).
