Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Olive Thorne Miller is the pseudonym of Harriet Mann Miller. An avid bird-watcher, she contributed to various journals, among them the journal of the Audubon Society. She advocated for the protection of birds from the fashion industry.

Someone gave me an 1899 edition of this book—a little gem with good, easy-to-understand information written in an old fashioned style.
Some biases noted: naughty BOYS ( but apparently not girls) might want to harm or shoot(!) birds.
Interesting, but not a keeper.

I was also gifted an 1899 copy by a friend since I’m an avid birder. The writing, of course shows the age of the book, but at least there is obvious bird advocacy for a time when birds were thought of as objects for humans to do whatever they want with. Very easy read for some base knowledge.
