He earned his B.A. in 1934 at New York University, and in 1936 became an assistant professor. He later earned his Ph.D. there during 1939. In 2005 he was awarded the Archaeological Institute of America Gold Medal.
This is basically a festschrift, albeit exclusively, but for the introduction, of essays penned by the author celebrated. Most are of the order of academic journal articles, some only likely to interest other scholars. While most are, as the title of the book suggests, about maritime trade in antiquity, I personally enjoyed most his bit on papyrology entitled "The Scrap Paper of Egypt".
