Not my favorite Mrs. Miller. The main story is just "meh" -- you can certainly see the repetition of tropes and plot "twists," which gets a bit boring. Still, I'm always excited to start a new Mrs. Miller book because you never know when she'll surprise you. No surprises here (other than the bad kind, such as the rather gross method of saving someone who is about to die and when the kind-of racism took a sudden turn for the worse towards the end), but maybe the next one will be better.

Another interesting aspect of each Mrs. Miller novel is the characterization of the inevitable detective. This one is more-than-usually useless and quite cynical. He doesn't even warrant a name.

Favorite line: "Edith is an embryo artist."
