The Old Neighborhood / the Disappearance of the Jews
In The Old Neighborhood David Mamet confirms his stature as a master of the American stage, a writer who can turn the most innocuous phrase into a lit fuse and a family reunion into a perfectly orchestrated firestorm of sympathy, yearning, and blistering authentic rage.

The disappointments of middle age lurk behind the regrets and anger with which the characters recall their youth.

I re-read this because I found I couldn't remember it, but upon re-read, I see why. It's inessential Mamet. The best of these three plays is the shortest, which is frustrating as it ends right when it really begins.

It's like ... What is? the play? ... Yes it's like going ... Reading the play is? Yes - reading a Mamet play again, it's like ... Going home?

Great dialog for the first two thirds of the piece, and then it lost me at the end.

What a terrible play filled with a world of “who cares.”

July 31, 2014Nobody write dialogue like Mamet. It's amazing to me how he can create a conversation where the characters put up bravado like nothing is wrong, but he leaves cracks in them for us to find, like chinks in their armor, and you can see the scared person inside. This one is interesting to me since I've been gone from home for a while going to school and I'm sort of a different person than I was before I left. I still find myself falling into old social patterns with some people, but coming home is very much like re-visiting my past. That's what's happening to Bobby in this play. It still has Mamet's trademark sexism in points, but he actually put effort into making three dimensional female characters in this go-around so it made it easier to stomach. Man. Nobody writes dialogue like Mamet.

I loved this in college. In fact, my earlier Goodreads review of this play said, "The emotions of the unsaid are masterfully treated by Mamet's dialogue."
Rereading it today, I didn't connect nearly as much. While it is true that much simmers under the surface, those emotions didn't engage me this time around.

Liked them as exercises--and that manner of overlapping and gapping dialogue. But maybe he even overdid that real-time hesitations verisimilitude stuff; anyway, it just seemed like episodes to me--nothing that really hung (or stuck) together.

Not so great either, but it gave me a pretty swell idea for a play that I've yet to finish. For what THAT'S worth.
