Acorn Hill is a flurry of activity when the Howard sisters set out to serve their friends. Alice finds herself in unfamiliar territory when she agrees to help Vera on a school field trip, Louise is called upon to be in charge of Nine Lives Bookstore and a most unusual helper, and Jane does her best to keep Rev. Kenneth Thompson from leaving his ministry at Grace Chapel, a possibility that causes deep concern for all three sisters. Through each of their adventures, they learn that serving others can often lead to blessings for everyone.
Alice agrees to help Vera on an out of town field trip, her charges will be 5th grade boys, something she isn’t used to.Louise agrees to be in charge of her friends bookstore and new reading group. The part time worker causes all kinds of trouble with her flighty ways. Jane is busy trying to stop their minister from leaving. The books always make me wonder how the sisters can run a BandB, work part time jobs and still have so much time to do all the extras they do for the town.
Loved it. When I want to catch up on my reading goal for the year I know I can order a bunch of these books and fly through a couple of them in a weekend. That is what I did last weekend and I still had time to watch a movie and some Olympics trials on tv with the family. I plan to do the same this weekend with another Tales from Grace Chapel Inn book and then the next book for the library reading club. After that it is back to the Harry Potter series
New things going on with the sisters. Louise is helping a friend with her book store by overseeing things while her friend is away taking care of a sick relative. Will it turn out to be more than she imagined having to handle?? Alice has gotten "roped" into helping her walking buddy with on a field trip to Philadelphia. Will she be able to handle this group of boys? She is used to her girls group at church. Jane is concerned about, and tries to help, Reverend Thompson and his questioning if his ministry was being effective and if he should move on and get a new position. Will her effort be successful?
Favorite quote from the book Louise "As she walked back to the inn, she reminded herself that God never gave her a heavier burden than she was able to bear. No doubt this new responsibility would be a learning experience. By the time she got home, she was looking forward to reading Dickens's famous story. Life was so much harder in Victorian times that his tale would serve to make her even more grateful for the blessings in her own life. (pg 27)
I need to take on new challenges with this kind of positive attitude. It can be hard when you have been working at home for so many years to transition to working for someone else. Some days it is very hard for me to cope and I wish I could just go home. But, God put me here to serve my family and him. So I press on and trust him to help me do my best for him and my family.
While They Also Serve is a light and reasonably entertaining read, I confess to being very disappointed in it. Having previously read Recipes and Wooden Spoons, I was expecting the same flamboyant and highly defined characters. Imagine my surprise when Jane is now wearing a French braid and linen instead of flowing orange caftan and beaded jewellery. When did Louise stop being the bossy older sister and become so mellow??? And I did not even recognize Aunt Ethel, who had previously been meddlesome and gossipy, now that she is the much-adored sweet little auntie. If a variety of authours are going to be writing a series containing the same characters, they really need to provide consstent characterization. Frankly, I preferred the characters as portrayed by Judy Baer.
This is a sweet story. It is a very fast page turner about three sisters who own and manage a bed and breakfast. There was some interesting historical information included during a school field trip to Philadelphia. Character development is lacking.
Another great story from The Tales of Grace Chapel Inn. There is something that touches your heart with each of these books. This one focus on Viola's bookstore, Vera's class, and the REV Thompson for the main plot lines. The authors of the book do make you want to take a trip and do some sightseeing in Alcorn Hill. You would have no choice but to stay in the inn. You could also visit all the stores that lure folks to the town. I enjoy stories of faith. Faith that is easy, faith that is tested, faith that needs to be renewed. The Guideposts books perfectly fit the bill.
The ladies of Grace Chapel Inn are just awesome. The work hard at their bed and breakfast and still find time to help others. Jane worked especially hard showing the Reverend how much he does in the town and how greatly he would be missed if he left..
Another nice book in this delightful Christian series about three sisters who reunite to turn their old Victorian family home into a B&B after the death of their father. This book does not highlight any guests as most do but, instead, shows each of the sisters giving of themselves to needs. Alice is called upon to help chaperone a school trip with her dear friend, Vera, a 5th grade teacher. Louise is asked to watch over Nine Lives bookstore when Viola has a family emergency. Jane finds out that their pastor is thinking of taking another job and makes it her mission to see why he should stay.
A very nice book; just not one of my favorites in this series. Great lessons of giving of oneself to others in need and having the right attitude by doing so.
