"Intended for beginners, as well as for more advanced ceramists and collectors, this book guides the reader through each step of the tilemaking process, with detailed, easily understood explanations, and corresponding how-to' photos. For inspiration, the book is also filled with photos of tilework by artists past and present."-- "Ceramics Monthly. "There is a lot of know-how in "Handmade Tiles
It comes as a highly recommended book for a learner setting out to make ceramic tiles. I read through it as a student would, marking it all up diligently and revisiting those sections. The 2 chapters I found most useful were on surface decoration and then the tables at the end on cones or the states of clay for different applications. What I regretted was that the book was printed in 1994 so the thoughts shared on the use of a computer are dated. Even electric kilns could have been covered with some specifics if the book was recent. A more minor quibble was that, leaving aside a few photos, most inspiring work shared in the book is not specifically covered in the text to draw parallels. They are just there as colourful stickers. Author’s own photos were indeed highlighted in the text.
One of the two best books I've read on tile and mural making. I gave it 4-stars because I found that Mr. Giorgini holds back on a few details here and there (I put this down to male ego). You won't notice this until you're in the middle of a project. Despite that, it is an exceptional book on the subject. A must-have if you are serious about both the art and the craft of tilemaking.
