The Autobiography of Maharshi Devendranath Tagore

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

It's a travel memoir with extensive detail. I picked it up to know more about the Brahmo Samaaj and the religion of Brahmism founded by the author. He expresses his views about idol worship and also on Vedanta. The book describes an attempt to carve out a religion of book from the Hinduism.
Interestingly, he uses the Hindu Calender and not the Gregorian calendar to mention the months. This makes a lot of sense since this is followed by a description of the weather.
All in all, It gives a good account of the people he met and places he visited. A particular example that I'll remember is the inference he draws when he sees a river. He questions 'Why does the river(spirit?) descend down to the plains to get all dirty?'. Maharshi then observes that this is to fertilise the plains and provide the populace with food. He compares this to an ascetic(himself) in the Himalayas. Does he stay there after achieving enlightenment, or does he go back to the masses? The river tells the way and he follows. :)
