Davy Crockett #6

Comanche Country

Rate this book
No other pioneer could have hoped to survive the dangers that Davy faced when he and his old friend Flavius tried to cross the vast Western prairies. A roaring wildfire and a rampaging buffalo stampede were excitement enough for Flavius, but Davy knew their troubles were just beginning when they came face-to-face with the rulers of the prairies--the Comanche. .

Davy and his sidekick Flavius Harris have been trying to get to St. Louis for several books now. At the beginning of this volume, they are escorting the widow and young child they rescued in the previous book. Their journey east to reach the Mississippi River is interrupted by a prairie fire, then a buffalo stampede, then a hailstorm. During all this, they lose their horses. The two girls are then captured by Comanches.

The girls are rescued, but Flavius is captured in turn, forcing Davy to trail the war party into Texas. The extended climax has Davy teaming up with four Texians to rescue Flavius and two captive Texian women from a Comanche village, then a brutal hand-to-hand combat between Davy and a Texian who proves to be less than honorable.

This series has always been fun, but this one has the most intense and engrossing action scenes I've encountered so far during Davy's fictional adventures. Great entry in the series.
