Two naval officers are found dead in San Diego. Both had top-security clearances. Both were privy to highly sensitive information. Their deaths raise fears that someone is trying to compromise U.S. naval operations.
Able Team is ordered undercover to defuse the threat to the huge Pacific naval base. But when Carl Lyons and his men confront an enemy from their past who has managed to put together a well-trained army in the California interior, the Team comes close to making its final run!
The ABLE Team books are a series published by Eagle books that are a spin off from that company's Executioner series that was created by Don Pendleton. A total of 52 regular novels and two "Super Able Team" books. The Team also appeared in three "Heroes" anthologies of short stories, which included tales of another Executioner spin-off, Phoenix Force. After the series ended the characters were to appear in another series, Stony Man, which would run to 140 novels.
The colourful name of the author, Dick Stivers, is a pseudonym for several different authors, although it seems from the article on Wikipedia at least two are the same person. Wikipedia lists Nicholas Cain and Sgt. Nik Uhernik as two but these are the same person. Cain, who had served voluntarily in Vietnam, later became a state trooper in Colorado before working as a PI in Los Angeles.
Final Run is the 36th of the series. The story involves the suspicious deaths of two naval officers who had top-security clearances and the activities of a cult group, of which the son of a friend of the team has become involved. An old enemy of the team is also involved. I am assuming the story mentioned about their first meeting was told in a previous book.
There is a maxim that you can't judge a book by its cover. This is another example that that is not always true. That is not a condemnation, just an observation. You go into this knowing exactly what you are going to get, a bit like ordering a cheeseburger at MacDonalds. This is no piece of art but as usual, if you enjoy reading books where the baddies get their arses kicked then this is right up your alley. Just be warned that some of the descriptions of the effects of weapons on the human body are rather graphic.
Oh, bonus points to an American novel that uses the word chortle, a word that I have previously only associated with British comics like Buster, Cor, the Beano and The Dandy.
Fun chapter in the series. This time Able Team is investigating a scheme the KGB is involved in where they use prostitutes to drug naval personnel to get info from them. What was suppose to be a undercover op turns into their normal fire fights when it seems that an old enemy was the head of a new new age religion and was using it as cover to work on the drugs the KGB was using. The church has a large compound where the deacons are trained soldiers and the compound is well defended. Though Able Team likes a challenge.
Ron Renauld is no stranger to the Bolanverse writing several books throuhout the different runs. He is not the best but always a reliable read. Recommended for the ardent men's adventure fan, it has all the things you want.
