Where is the realm of Faerie, and how would it appear to mortal eyes? Where Arthur's Avalon, Eden, Lilliput, the islands of Doctor Moreau or the mighty Kong, or Eldorado, the jungle-shrouded city built of gold?
All are lost: destroyed, hidden, or forgotten - until now.
This spectacularly illustrated book by the authors of Realms of Fantasy, a guide through the landscapes of fantasy fiction, and Magician, based on the works of a practicing 16th century magus, will take you to the lands behind the legends, the fantasy world that lies within our own.
This is a strange book - I will admit I picked it up from the charity shop since I a huge fan of the now defunct papertiger press. Their books have inspired and fired up my imagination from a very early age. However along with some of the most amazing books I ever saw there were also a few duds and this sadly is slides towards that. The issue with this book is that it takes many fantastic and amazing situation or place - and discusses them as if they are undiscovered treasures the informed traveller will walk right past - for example in the style of lonely planet guides. However these places are those from such a wide range of subjects and places from King Kong, Call of Cthulhu and Gulliver's travels. The artwork is also cobbled together - in so cases from other books and subjects. Now this is a fascinating pieces of "nonsense" or "whimsy" and to be honest its a fun read but I never sit comfortably with books that take fantasy and insist its real or even treat it like some sort of educational discussion.
