Northern Roses and Southern Belles

Rate this book
In a country torn asunder--from the Canadian border to Texas, from Maryland to Arkansas, from the battlefield of Antietam to the Red River Campaign--brave men and loyal women see their lives turned upside down. Peril lurks behind every tree and near every homestead, but the hard-fought love of a man and a woman surpasses all. Six talented writers provide stories of romance and danger centering on Union and Confederate soldiers, spies, blockade runners, renegades, and battlefield nurses during a period of corsets, hoopskirts, and gentlemen callers.

Susan Macatee writes American Civil War and American Victorian romance, some with a paranormal twist. From time travels to vampire tales, her stories are always full of love and adventure.

She’s spent many years as a Civil War civilian reenactor with the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment. Besides writing romances set during the Civil War, she’s a big science fiction fan and hopes to encorporate that genre into a future romance story.

Her other loves are reading most genres of romance, rooting on her favorite baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies, and spending time with her husband and three sons.

What happens when six writers decide to collaborate on an anthology of civil war romantic fiction? Six varied stories that each describe a different facet of that terrible war. This anthology is a good way to wile away an afternoon by the fire. It reminds us that no matter how terrible the conflict, love will prevail. I recommend it heartily.

My favorite of the stories is "A long way home" by Caroline Clemmons. It is loosely based on one of her ancestors.

Although my story, Angel of My Dreams, is part of this anthology, I've read the other five stories, romances all set during the American Civil War. The stories are set in different locations around the U.S. with one set in Canada.

These stories of love amidst wartime range from sweet to sensuous, embracing all types of characters as they find their way to love and a satisfying ending.
