This practical and inspirational guide to planning, sowing and harvesting your own food is based on the author’s experience with allotment gardening in England and grew out of his show for the Gardener’s World series.
An interesting diary of a first year allotment, with lots of encouragement and anecdotes, and good info on various techniques. It's very reassuring to read that a professional gardener is yet challenged by weeds and pests and 'plant says no'. I appreciate it's the age of the book but I was disappointed to see a page on the merits of glyphosate (though it did mention some of the dangers). It seems out of place in a book that sings the praises of organic methods on every other page! All in all, this is a very easy read, with great photos and lots of useful information, as well as tips on more unusual veg like sweet potatoes, and the best techniques for liberating supermarket herbs...
