I found this one digging through some boxes at the charity shop: it's a good general account of the earth sciences although it is extremely dated (this particular copy was printed in 1972. It already reads like a historical document: scary how quickly science advances. Most of this book is taken up by the defence of Wegener's ''revolutionary theory of shifting continental plates'', which is now taken for granted, so I read this for historical interest really.
