Composed when he was a young priest, The Sermons of the Cure of Ars constitutes one of the most powerful Saints\' writings in the literature of the Church. No one will read this book without realizing that his own moral subterfuges have been laid bare and that he needs to address the camouflaged sins and weaknesses lying buried in his inmost heart.
I can tell that the Cure d'Ars was a fervent and gifted priest. I think given his audience at the time the language/tone was probably appropriate, but I found it to be a bit jarring. Inflammatory language isn't as compelling to me as reasoned, merciful explanation. I read this concurrently with the sermons of St. Alphonsus Liguori and found St. Alphonsus much more appealing. Still, the sermons of St. John Vianney are a great read ~ get a flavor for the time of one of the greatest mystics I know of.
Not a very *pleasant* read, but that is not the idea. The author is trying to jar the audience out of sin and their appointed destination- hell. Might be good lenten reading, but probably not good at all for anyone who is scrupulous. Only the last 1/8 of the book or so I found encouraging, where the author's jansenistic spirit lifts for a little and becomes encouraging in urging souls to live for God...
