Selected Stories and Sketches

Rate this book
Between 1819 and 1828, James Hogg contributed short stories and articles to Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine under the general title The Shepherd's Calendar. Douglas Mack's edition begins with five pieces which firs appeared in this series. These are followed by three later stories from Blackwoods, a contribution to the annual The Anniversary (1829), and four stories which were published in Fraser's Magazine between 1830 and 1835. For this book, the editor has returned to Hogg's own texts, and has provided a representative selection of the best of Hogg's shorter prose works, several of which are reprinted for the first time since the early 1830s.
