Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh, CBE, who also wrote under the pseudonym Barbara Vine, was an acclaimed English crime writer, known for her many psychological thrillers and murder mysteries and above all for Inspector Wexford.
Liked both of these books, the second one being a Inspector w series. Very interesting first book- many controlling male characters, not far from real life, in my experience.
The Crocodile Bird was a slow read and tough to get through. If it were by another author, I would've put it away, but I love Rendell. I got through it but found it predictable. Simisola is one of the best Rendell mysteries. The characters are well-drawn and the mystery pulls you in. The story is very well paced.
"The Crocodile Bird is almost the inverse of Rendell’s Judgement in Stone, which famously begins, “Eunice Parchman killed the family because she could neither read nor write.”"
