Jane Austen's Sailor Brothers: Being the Adventures of Sir Francis Austen ... and ... Charles Austen

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Hubback's narrative is friendly as he weaves together quotes from ship logs, letters, and other primary sources to tell the stories of his grandfather's (Francis Austen's) and greatuncle's (Charles Austen's) naval careers and how they affected his greataunt's (Jane Austen's) novels. He quotes from Persuasion and Mansfield Park to demonstrate the correlations between the real and fictionalized lives of seamen and relevant activities of the British Navy. Very interesting, informative, and insightful.

This book was a wonderful piece of Austen ephemera. I would also recommend it to naval history fans, Napoleonic history, and history fans in general. I learned some very interesting items about the British Navy circa 1800's. Especially that one of Jane Austen's brothers was given his final rank by Queen Victoria.
