Even though many of the featured and presented episodical interludes in Ilse Kleberger’s Ferien mit Oma (basically the Piselang children being on a camping vacation with Grandma and which in English translation is titled Grandmother Oma and the Green Caravan) are more than a bit dated, and while there are also some definite instances of rather obvious and annoying gender stratification shown (not too surprising though, for a novel originally published in 1967), it is certainly rather delightfully refreshing that the author’s, that Ilse Kleberger's Oma character is so fiercely independent, adventuresome and always young at heart. As indeed, Oma might well look like the typical and traditional German grandmother of bygone years, but she uses roller-skates, is not afraid of anything and gives her grandchildren a fun and entertaining, eventful holiday with a horse and large gypsy-type carriage. One of my absolute favourites books when I was about eleven or twelve years old, and although rereading Ferien mit Oma has not proven quite as magical, it is still a sweet and generally enjoyably entertaining enough family based story and reading romp, full of episodic humour and fun, with some mild sibling rivalries and teachable moments thrown in for good measure (much recommended, but with the necessary caveat that a basic and decent fluency in German is suggested, although both the vocabulary used and the stylistics of the text, of Ilse Kleberger's narrative in Ferien mit Oma are actually not too overly involved and difficult). Three stars (no more and no less, and I will neither make any comments on the English language translation as I have not read Grandmother Oma and the Green Caravan nor am I at present planning to read the third and the fourth of Ilse Kleberger's Oma stories, unless Villa Oma and 2:0 für Oma are on Open Library or really cheaply available for purchasing on ABE Books).

Ich hatte "Ferien mit Oma" 2004 geschenkt bekommen und wollte es auch gleich lesen, aber irgendwie konnte ich nicht viel damit anfangen. An genaue Gründe kann ich mich nicht mehr erinnern, doch ich hatte das Buch abgebrochen und in den letzten Jahren stand es dann auch so im Schrank. Heute habe ich einen zweiten Versuch gestartet und obwohl ich immer noch nicht begeistert bin, so war es doch eine ganz angenehme Lektüre.

Die titelgebende Oma ist ganz klar der beste und interessanteste Charakter. Sie weiß, wie sie ihre Enkel im Zaum halten kann und ihnen zugleich eine tolle, spaßige Erfahrung zu bereiten. Sie kann streng sein, ist aber auch sehr schlau und weiß, wie sie den Kindern gutes Benehmen und Lebensweisheiten vermitteln kann, ohne dass es ihnen richtig auffällt. Ihre Idee, gemeinsam einen abenteuerlichen Urlaub in Deutschland zu veranstalten, war schön und die Reise war auch gut und unterhaltsam geschildert. Die Familie hat definitiv einiges erlebt und die Kinder werden nie mehr sagen, dass Ferien mit Oma langweilig sind.

Trotzdem konnte die Geschichte mich nicht richtig packen und mit den Enkeln konnte ich leider nicht viel anfangen. Sie hatten ihre eigenen Persönlichkeiten und ich mochte die Dynamik unter ihnen, allerdings fand ich sie zwischendurch ein wenig nervig und anstrengend, was mir den Lesespaß etwas verdorben hat. Davon abgesehen habe ich mich ganz gut unterhalten, ich mochte wie gesagt die Großmutter sehr und das Buch lässt sich auf jeden Fall flüssig lesen. Deshalb gibt es von mir 3,5 Sterne.

Babcia Pieselang nie jest zwykłą babcią, bo zwykłe babcie raczej nie jeżdżą brawurowo na wrotkach. Przynajmniej moja nie jeździła, nawet na rowerze nie śmigała, bo zapomniała jak to się robi. Naprawdę, powiedzenie "tego się nie zapomina, to jak z jazdą na rowerze" możecie między bajki włożyć.

W "Wakacjach z babcią" przeżyjemy przygodę, bo czy wpakowanie się całą rodzinką do wozu objazdowego magika i wyruszenie w świat przygodą nie jest? Ale to oczywiście nie wszystko! Nauczymy się trochę gotować, pozwiedzamy, umożliwimy odnalezienie się rozdzielonej rodzinie i przede wszystkim dowiemy się, że warto być dobrym i pomagać innym. Dodatkiem do tej historii są pięknie ilustracje, a całość stanowi jedno z moich najmilszych wspomnień z dzieciństwa.
