Allan Jaffee was an American cartoonist. He was notable for his work in the satirical magazine Mad, including his trademark feature, the Mad Fold-in. Jaffee was a regular contributor to the magazine for 65 years and is its longest-running contributor. In a 2010 interview, Jaffee said, "Serious people my age are dead." With a career running from 1942 until 2020, Jaffee holds the Guinness World Record for having the longest career as a comic artist. In the half-century between April 1964 and April 2013, only one issue of Mad was published without containing new material by Jaffee. In 2008, Jaffee was honored by the Reuben Awards as the Cartoonist of the Year. Cartoonist Arnold Roth of The New Yorker said, "Al Jaffee is one of the great cartoonists of our time." Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz wrote, "Al can cartoon anything."
There is nothing like the ability of the staff of “Mad Magazine” to take common horror entertainment themes and twist them into something even more bizarre. In this book, a series of monster themes and some generally routine events are morphed into humorous conclusions. Some of the stories are:
*) A very sexist rewrite of the man creates perfect woman from parts story. *) The cannibal visiting a psychiatrist in a search for a cure. *) A longtime dweller in a dungeon finally being released. *) The prince being turned into a frog and needing a kiss from the fair maiden to be restored to his human form.
The people at Mad definitely possess twisted minds, in this case the reader gets to enjoy their unusual perspective on what is already a bizarre area of entertainment.
Always good to read classic MAD, and Jaffee (still active at 98, even though MAD Magazine itself has sadly folded [but not Folded In; only Jaffee can Fold In]) was and is one of their greatest. Yecch with a snicker.
A fun collection of Al Jaffee's cartoons, this volume features all original gags with a "monster" theme. Juvenile humor at times, but good for a bunch of smirks during the ten minutes it'll take you to read it. Al was (and still is) a master cartoonist and I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy his artwork on his quirky sense of humor.
A disturbing bit of humor that warped my mind as a child. I often purchased cheap Mad paperbacks while traveling, and this was one of my favorites. This was not reprints, but original material, so it was prepared with paperback printing in mind. Jaffee was a brilliant writer/artist and this suited the brand of 'Mad' as much as anything could!
