I have a soft spot for amateur social history, and thus a book by an interesting yet inexpert collector of anecdotes about the history of cosmetics in England seemed like a good bet. Unfortunately, Gunn despises women for their "feminine vanity" and despises the use of cosmetics for making a "mockery of nature" which means makes the book a very unpleasant read. It is something like a history, yes, but a very misogynistic one.
