Mary Frances Blaisdell (1874-? ) was the author of numerous books for children at the beginning of the twentieth century, including: Pretty Polly Flinders (1914), Bunny Rabbit's Diary (1915), Polly and Dolly (1919), Tommy Tinkeras Book (1911), Twilight Town (1913) and Cherry Tree Children (1922). With her sister Etta Austin Blaisdell, later Mrs. McDonald (1872-? ), she co-authored: Life (1900), Child Life in Literature (1900), Child Life in Many Lands (1900), The Child Life Primer (1901), Child Life in Tale and Fable (1902) and Boy Blue and His Friends (1906).
I think this is the first chapter book I ever read. When I found it in our storeroom on the farm in a box with a bunch of other books, I wasn't sure what it was. But I opened it up and found that the writing was fairly large, and the words were ones I knew. (I was no more than 6 at the time.) So I started reading.
It was about a bunny, and a gift he received on his birthday. He got a book, but when he opened it, all the pages were empty. His mother told him he would fill the book with stories. And that's what he did. Chapter One was his first story.
I'll never forget how excited I was when I realized this book WAS Bunny Rabbit's Diary. Of course, I knew it wasn't written by a bunny. But I had a vivid imagination as a child, and I could easily pretend the book I had in my hands was written by my friend Bunny Rabbit. I couldn't wait to read all the other chapters and find out about all of his adventures.
So I'm giving this book 5 stars, not so much because it's one of the best children's books ever written. But more so because it took me to a new level as a beginning reader. It took me from picture books to novels.
