Describes the social and economic structure of life in the High Middle Ages (1100-1400), including the ruling classes, the peasantry, the urban dwellers, and members of the Church and the role each group played in shaping European civilization.
Kathryn Hinds grew up near Rochester, NY, then moved to New York City to attend Barnard College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She now lives in the beautiful mountains of north Georgia, but migrates back to the southern shore of Lake Ontario nearly every summer. Although Kathryn has held a variety of jobs—waitress, administrative assistant, early childhood educator, research assistant, editorial assistant, French and Latin tutor, library information specialist—writing has been her constant occupation. Her published works include poetry, short stories, a coauthored book on Celtic mythology, and more than fifty nonfiction books for children and young adults. Her most recent books are the fantasy novel The Healer's Choice; The Forty, a collection of short stories co-authored with James Palmer, with photographs by Fox Gradin; and a volume of poetry, Candle, Thread, and Flute. Kathryn teaches English at the University of North Georgia.
Nonfiction... I picked this up because of the beautiful artwork on the cover, and now you can't even see it! I am currently taking a Renaissance Art and Culture class, and I thought this book would help me understand the time period more. And it did. I think it's written at about a middle-school level, actually (at least I hope it is -- if it's written for high school, we're in serious trouble in this world), but that was basically fine for my purposes, and there is a lot of lovely artwork throughout...
I guess this is so new that it didn't show up in the Goodreads listing. I had to enter the ISBN number to find it. This is a large youth book with loads of bright color illustrations. Elementary reading level (4th-7th grade), but written more like a school book to study than a book to read for entertainment.
Packed with details of how life was like in the Middle Ages. Also, Kathryn Hinds included arts and writing excerpts of the time period. To me this book will help readers to understand terms that are commonly used in other books set in this particular era.
This book is very readable. The book is divided into sections that focus on where people lived and then looks at how that affected them. The author makes a point of including information about medieval women and what their lives were like.
