"Shiel has done so much better than my best that I am left breathless and inarticulate." H. P. LOVECRAFT

A BIOGRAPHY OF THE WEST INDIAN
AND EARLY LITERARY LONDON LIFE OF M. P. SHIEL

West Indian-born author Matthew Phipps Shiell has been recognized for over a century as one of the most accomplished story tellers and stylists of the 19th century - author of such classics of the imagination as The Purple Cloud, The Lord of the Sea, Shapes in the Fire and a handful of supernatural tales that stand with the best.

This biography describes the forces that shaped Shiel's character and writing. Here are his early years on the island of Montserrat, at school on Barbados, his sail-away to England and a fascinating life as a young schoolteacher and emerging literary artist in London's days of Bohemian glory and decadence.

Never before published family photographs in the West Indies and the texts of previously unpublished letters and documents, add color to this biography of Shiel as a fascinating literary figure whose works continue to excite new cycles of readers.
