Lucky's Plott: A Plott Hound Tale
Hunting season has finally arrived and Battle Cry, a Plott Hound, is on his first hunt of the year. Every ounce of him from his nose to his tail quivers with excitement. He eagerly anticipates romping through the woods with his Plott companions to see who can be the first to strike, tree, or bay. Little did he know that around the bend an event loomed that would change his life. This passion has been documented through a life-time of pictures showing a curly-haired toddler with her first dog, Lady Bum, to her second pet Laddy, her companion from adolescence to college. Photos from 37 years of marriage to her husband Rick reveal their affection for twelve lucky dogs--ten of which were rescues.
Consequently, family members and friends weren't surprised when Libby stopped to assist an injured dog in 2002. With help from Rick and three other good Samaritans, they rushed the animal to their vet. Fortunately, this lucky pooch survived and joined their already-large K-9 family.
They had no idea of his breed when they rescued Lucky. At a follow-up vet visit, they learned he was a Plott hound--NC's state dog. Surprised our state recognized a canine state symbol, Libby inquired of others about their knowledge of the Plott. Discovering how few people knew this portion of NC's history, Libby envisioned how she could best spread the plot of this story.
Using her business and educational media degrees from UNC in Greensboro, NC, and Winthrop College, in SC, Libby created a presentation, "Staying on Track With Lucky's Plott." In 2007, Lucky and Libby hit the road "talking Plotts." Since then over 10,000 lucky Tar Heels in 37 North Carolina counties have proclaimed their presentation to be one "howling" good time.
For children, Libby has written Lucky's Plott, A Plott Hound Tale in 2008 and designed Lucky's website, www.luckysplott.com. Her educator's guide, Tracking Plott Hound History, NC's State Dog was published in 2009. They have been lucky that numerous NC magazines and newspapers have stayed on their track documenting their exploits across their beautiful Tar Heel state as they follow the scent for other dog lovers and for those who want to learn more NC history.

I don't read many children's books, but as a former large breed dog rescuer, I was drawn to LUCKY'S PLOTT, about a rescued Plott hound. The story is about a plott hound that gets hit by a car while on a hunt. I'm also a 2nd Amendment right advocate, though I don't hunt or own a weapon. The story doesn't shy away from hunting, or dangers to a dog...which I loved about it. Yet, it presents that in a way a child can handle. When Lucky is rescued and taken to a new home the story gets so warm an fuzzy. There is an adendum telling about the real life Lucky. There's also a glossary. I learned the Plott Hound is North Carolina's state dog. This would be a great book for teacher's in NC to use in the classroom. The price is a bit steep...but then it was suggested to me that I don't purchase many kids book. They're expensive due to the illustrations, which are captivating in this book

I met this amazing dog and his owner Libby last summer at our library's literary festival. Lucky loves attention and Libby had to get the crowd cheering and clapping for him to make an appearance. The story of NC state dog, Battle Cry, is based on actual events that occurred when Libby found Lucky wounded on the side of the road and rescued him. My grandchildren love the story and with each page turn they soon picked up on the repeating phrase "one lucky dog." Lucky and Libby live in my area and hopefully one day when my grand-kids are visiting they will get a chance to met Lucky.

Super sweet children's book about a rescued dog - illustrations are fabulous - a very happy book!
