Chris has decided to leave her husband Keith and set up house with her slightly seedy coworker Pete — an exercise she probably knows in her heart of hearts will be fraught with problems. Once she's gone, Keith realizes what he's lost, while Pete, on the other hand, needs some convincing that more goes into a relationship than two pairs of shoes at the foot of the bed.
Meanwhile, a young woman's mutilated body is found in a local wood, and Chris becomes involved in investigating the murder. The woman at first appears to have been a model citizen, a paragon of virtue, and local police assume the killing to be a random act of violence committed by a psychopath. But as Chris tries to unravel a series of baffling clues, she becomes convinced that there's more — much more — to this case than meets the eye.
Pursuing her investigations despite (or perhaps because of) a series of personal crises, Chris almost becomes the victim of the murderer herself.
