Understanding what the Bible teaches about itself is an issue of central importance. However, correct theologies of the Bible can be expressed in non-biblical categories; and it would be foolish to believe of the Bible what it does not claim for itself, whether implicitly or explicitly. Peter Adam's conviction is that there is a coherent 'biblical theology of the Bible'. In this wide-ranging volume, he searches the Scriptures to find their answer to the question of their identity and use, and expounds the following summary * Receiving God's words * Written for his people * By his Spirit * About his Son This fresh, energetic presentation is a valuable complement to the author's previous works on the function and application of Scripture in Christian life and ministry.
Peter Adam's major ministries have included lecturing at St John's College Durham, UK, and serving in Melbourne as vicar of St Jude's, Carlton from 1982-2002, and then as principal of Ridley Melbourne from 2002-2012. He was also chaplain of Melbourne University and archdeacon for parish development in the Melbourne Anglican diocese. Peter is currently vicar emeritus of St Jude's, Carlton, and Canon of St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne.
Absolutely both loved and benefited from this book. So foundational, helpful, detailed, scriptural, yet clear and well-argued. This is not a book that goes 'wide' into examining other views of Scripture (though there is enough in there to chase up if you want to), but it is a book that goes deep into the Scriptures to make clear how the Scriptures themselves reveal God to us today. This book will grow your confidence in and love for the Bible. It's helped me to renew and refresh my own love for Jesus and for the Scriptures, and also done so in a way that will help spur me on in Christian life and ministry. I can't recommend it enough, particularly to those who work in and with the Scriptures. This book will help and remind you why reading, loving, imbibing, teaching and applying the Bible is so golden.
I've already ordered Peter Adam's other two books on the Scriptures ('Speaking God's Words' and 'Hearing God's Words') to ensure I keep reading him on this topic - I wish I'd done so before now.
I've enjoyed the four talks Peter Adam gave at a university students' Mid-Year Conference at Monash University in 2007 on this topic and am now tackling the book. What I've read so far is thought-provoking and encouraging.
