Rate this book

3.5 stars. This book explains how school education under Japanese colonization transformed the education to "modern" one (e.g. emphasis on mental and physical discipline). Quite straightforward. Mostly institutional history (describing programs of new schools etc), but research of the last few chapters creatively use new materials (students' essays etc) although the findings are not eye-opening.
