This is an excellent beginner's guide to trees and shrubs in Alberta. It is written in easy-to-read, plain language that doesn’t require a degree in botany to understand. It is a perfect book for learning about common woody plants in Alberta.

What makes this book great:

-Plain language

-Coloured pictures

-Descriptions of natural regions and habitats

-Simple keys

-Interesting information about each plant

What this book lacks:

-Comprehensive list of trees and shrubs in Alberta

-In-depth look at plant structures, development, and propagation

While this is not a book that I would take to the field to assist with plant identification, it is still a valuable resource and an excellent addition to my nature reference library.

Super helpful for identifying trees! Only problem is I still cannot tell the difference between a narrow-leaf cottonwood and a bebb willow.
