Of all of Deborah Laufer's plays, this one is in some ways the quintessence of her style. It is very, very funny, and while we laugh with her main character, Deborah Laufer also makes us love her. Any woman will recognize herself here, and laugh.
I think this is brilliant. It's so on the nose it's hilarious. I can vividly see every detail & I love how stylized it is. As a woman I can really appreciate the humor and style instead of some boring drama about a life we all may have known at some point.
I really really wanted to like this play. It has lovely moments. There are some excellent hilarious moments. The main character is very much "on type" for me as well. HOWEVER, I just felt like the message of the play was heavy-handed. I liked the overall message, and I think in the right production it could go well, but it could also very easily go not so well, at which point I ask, is the play doing more harm than good to an important, sometimes sensitive topic?
