Washington In The Lap Of Rome is a historical book written by Justin Dewey Fulton and published in 1888. The book explores the influence of the Roman Catholic Church on American politics and society during the late 19th century. The author argues that the Church's power and influence extended beyond its religious sphere and into the political and social realms of American life. The book discusses the role of Catholicism in shaping American immigration policies, education, and the legal system. It also delves into the relationship between the Church and the government, particularly in the context of the debate over the separation of church and state. The book provides a detailed analysis of the Catholic Church's efforts to gain influence in American society and the challenges it faced in doing so. Overall, Washington In The Lap Of Rome offers a unique perspective on the intersection of religion and politics in America during the late 19th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This review is for the book by Fulton and not the lengthy introduction provided by Chris Pinto in his hard copy edition. I read Pinto's preface and would give it a 4 stars, but that is for another place.

The reason I deducted two stars was simply because:

#1 The book is discombobulated with a lot of interesting but irrelevant material that had nothing to do with "Washington in the lap of Rome". For example, the horrible confessionals deserve all the rebuke and exposure provided by Fulton but NOT in this book. I wanted to read evidence that what I believe to be true (that Washington IS in the lap of Rome, beginning in the 19th century when this book was penned), not a refutation of Romanism (which I thoroughly agree with the author on).

#2 Much of the argumentation is weak, at best. There's just no "there", there much of the time.

With that said, there ARE good things to be said for the book. There IS good information in the book. It would be worth the time to read and you might find some of the irrelevant material to still be educational or at least whet your appetite for more information on the Roman Catholic cult.

I highly recommend this book if you want to read about history that never got disclosed to you in school. If you decide to read it, please get the most recent printing that has the introductory material written by Christian J. Pinto. Pinto's segment is worth the purchase of the book alone.
