This book isn't to be confused with Jean Slaughter Doty's Winter Pony. For starters, this book is set in Iceland, not America. Not a lot of kids books are set in Iceland. There is a sequel to this book which is much better, called Runaway Pony.

Prince is an Icelandic Pony. He's going to be driven with the other ponies to a summer pasture, a long way from where his young owner Anna lives. Everyone tells Anna that Prince will be fine. Her grandmother (who plays a much bigger part in the sequel) tells her that Prince will be taken care of by wood elves and mountain trolls.

Anna dreams something bad happens to Prince -- and she's right. The herd stallion has forced Prince OVER A CLIFF.

And yet it all turns out okay.

I really didn't appreciate the suggestion that magical beings helped the pony. The story was trotting along well enough on its own. I made the mistake of reading the sequel first, so this book really suffers in comparison. Some of the black text is printed against a charcoal background, making it incredibly hard to read.

Otherwise, the illustrations are incredible. The watercolors are far batter than the story. Interspersed with the ponies and people are wild native birds of Iceland, or a wild rabbit.
