Torra was raised in a working class, Italian-American home in Somerville, Massachusetts. He was editor of the literary journal "lift". He has been a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
Trauma is as trauma does. It just ruins lives in tragically ordinary ways that occasionally make headlines. Who is to blame? Plenty of miscreants around, plus drugs, alcohol, genetics, and holes in our own social and psychological safety nets. Torra reaches into the troubled mind and beautiful soul of young woman in this seductively harrowing account of low-end working-class life in New England. Feels like a triumph of imagination, reportage, and empathy. Take it slow.
