Some True Adventures in the Life of Hugh Glass, a Hunter and Trapper on the Missouri River
Cover artwork: adapted from 1911 painting by famous Great West artist Charles Russell
Hugh Glass (c. 1780–1833) was an American fur trapper and frontiersman noted for his exploits in the American West during the first third of the 19th century. Glass was born in Pennsylvania, to Irish parents. He was an explorer of the watershed of the Upper Missouri River in present day North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. Glass was famed, most of all, as a frontier folk hero for his legendary cross-country trek after being mauled by a grizzly bear. Glass' most famous adventure began in 1822, when he responded to an advertisement in the Missouri Gazette and Public Adviser, placed by General William Ashley, which called for a corps of 100 men to "ascend the river Missouri" as part of a fur trading venture. These men would later be known as Ashley's Hundred.
Besides Glass, others who joined the enterprise included notables such as James Beckwourth, Thomas Fitzpatrick, David Jackson, John Fitzgerald, William Sublette, Jim Bridger, and Jedediah Smith.
Early in the trek, Glass established himself as a hard-working fur trapper. He was apparently wounded on this trip in a battle with Arikara, and later traveled with a party of 13 men to relieve traders at Fort Henry, at the mouth of the Yellowstone River. The expedition, led by Andrew Henry, planned to proceed from the Missouri, up the valley of the Grand River in present-day South Dakota, then across to the valley of the Yellowstone.
The sketch in this book is related by the explorer and Army officer Philip St. George Cooke.
This book originally published by Lindsay & Blakiston in 1857 has been reformatted for the Kindle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

This was a very short but interesting read. Cooke must have been using first hand accounts from people who knew Hugh Glass and what went down with the Grizzly. Not like the Revenant rendition of events, this happened in the high desert where water and exposure are deadly threats. His lucky encounter with Indians he was familiar with the Sioux is what probably saved him. Well worth reading this from first hand accounts of what actually happened.

Nice and concise account of an incredibly harrowing tale of survival. The writing was a little hard to follow at times but I still found it enjoyable overall.

I liked the book. Actually I would consider it more of a short story. But it was well written. I would recommend it to those really interested in the trapper/mountain man history and lore.

This book I found on a Kindle web site, is not a book about Hugh Glass the individual who is the subject of the movie Revenant.
It is rather a segment from a larger book about the adventures and interests of U S Army officer Phillip St. George Cooke. The author has written about and covered the trapper's encounter with a grizzly bear and his arduous crawl back to the nearest out post of a fort on the frontier. The difficult effort to survive and return to the group of mountain men who left him alone on the plains without his rifle, knife and fire starting tools.
This book as well as many others that deal with Hugh Glass covers his injuries, risks and heroic travel back to life.

I liked the fast pace and rhythm of the writing. This is for anyone who likes adventure. The ending was perfect for me . All though I was a little shocked. It is a great testament to human nature.

Interesting short read about the mountain man Hugh Glass
A story of bravery and perseverance in the most dire of circumstances. Short read but it is exciting and entertaining nonetheless.

Truth about Hugh Glass
The movie thee Revenant was good but as usual Hollywood adds their twist. I wanted the original story and this provided the facts.
