Lightweight testimonial designed to encourage people to seek the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
John Osteen (not to be confused with his son, Joel Osteen) was a pioneer pastor in the Charismatic Revival that started among denominational churches in the late 50s through to the end of the 80s. During the Charismatic Revival, many people from non-Pentecostal backgrounds or in traditional denominations experienced manifestations of the Holy Spirit including speaking in tongues, prophesying in the spirit, speaking Words of Knowledge, and/or receiving instantaneous healing in answer to prayer. The doctrine of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit had jumped from what had been, at the time, the fringe Pentecostal Denominations into the mainstream.
John Osteen was a pioneer in this movement. He was a Baptist preacher with a firm foundation and education in traditional Baptist theology when, during a crisis experience in which he interceded for a medical miracle for his daughter, he received both the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and a healing miracle for his daughter in answer to prayer.
Osteen became such a firm advocate of the Pentecostal Gifts he was ostracized by his own denomination. He became a leader among the Charismatics and moved in Full Gospel, Faith, and Charismatic circles, establishing his own independent Charismatic Ministry which is now pastored by his son, Joel Osteen, as Lakewood Church.
This Awakening Generation is a light read and consists of his own testimony in receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, his observations of the move of the Spirit in the mainline denominations, and then scripturally based encouragement for those who seek to experience the Holy Spirit for themselves.
This is a fine book for a young convert seeking the experience of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, or those interested in John Osteen's own experiences coming from his Baptist background into the Charismatic movement. But it's a light read, not very meaty.
