Patricia Shaw has a wonderful way of transporting her readers back to the early days of English settlement in Australia. This novel set in Darwin describes the lives and perils faced by both outback landowners and city folk. All governance in those days emanated from far distant Adelaide. Locals were isolated from most cultural and fashion trends in the civilised world and developed their own unique customs. I loved the author’s insight into the lives of her characters, their self reliance and the interactions between different levels of society including indigenous people. The main character William Oakley and his son Myles have suffered personal tragedy and are in search of ways to move forward. This is a terrific saga with action, romance and travel added to the mix. I can absolutely recommend this entertaining book. Carinya
This is a really good story based in Northern Territory of Australia at the turn of the last century.
I read the FEATHER AND THE STONE a few months ago. This book is the sequel to that one. As with the previous one I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well. The story has moved on a few years and the characters have aged. I found the plot very gripping. I enjoyed their happiness and felt their sadness. The constant struggle with the aborigines was often cruel and bloodthirsty. This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED but read the FEATHER AND THE STONE first to get full value from this one.
over all its an OK book. I had a hard time with the time line; 10-1900 back to 6-1899 then 12-1900. It was a good story of early settlement of Australia's Northern Territory. It also reminded me that south of the equator Christmas is in the Summer.
