About the author

A specialist in Russo-Japanes relations, George Alexander Lensen was educated in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After becoming an American citizen in 1943, he served in Army Intelligence in the Far East during World War II. He joined the Florida State University's History faculty in 1949 as an instructor and received his Ph. D. from Columbia University in 1951. Lenten was a Fulbright Research Scholar from 1953 until 1954 and a Senior Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1967 until 1968.
